Chapter 1: The Mystery Of The Missing Shroud

Chapter Text

Shattered Glass
Chapter 1: The Missing Shroud Brother

The Mirror Chamber had never been known for its warmth.

Tall stained glass windows filtered in fractured light, scattering jeweled colors across the marble floor. It was meant to be a place of order. Ceremony. Structure.

Which was precisely why the absence felt so loud.

A meeting had been called for all Housewardens in preparation for the upcoming Entrance Ceremony. Attendance was mandatory.

Of course, Housewarden Shroud was missing.

An unfortunate Ignihyde student had already been dispatched to retrieve him. The instruction had been clear: no tablet, no holograms, physically present. This meeting mattered.

At the center of the chamber, the Housewardens stood in a loose formation.

“It’s been ten seconds,” Riddle Rosehearts snapped, checking his pocket watch with sharp irritation. “Now eleven. Where are they?”

Vil Schoenheit did not look up at first. He was inspecting his reflection in a compact mirror, adjusting a stray lock of hair with precise elegance.

“Riddle, dear, calm down,” Vil said smoothly. “That much anger is going to cause wrinkles.”

His violet eyes flicked upward, annoyance slipping through his polished composure.

“Besides, of course he would be late. That boy practically lives in exile. He just left.”

The last word carried more bite than usual.

From the far corner, Kalim Al-Asim perked up, hands clasped together in sudden inspiration.

“Oh! Maybe I should go help out!”

Before anyone could object, he darted out of the chamber, practically glowing with enthusiasm.

Leona Kingscholar let out a low chuckle from where he leaned against a pillar.

“Well, well. The energetic bird’s flown the nest,” he drawled, golden eyes half-lidded with amusement.

These meetings always interrupted his naps. It was mildly entertaining when chaos made them run late.

Or when certain people simply failed to show up.

Riddle’s foot tapped sharply against the marble.

“This is unacceptable.”

The stained glass light shifted again, casting fractured shadows across their faces.

Somewhere in the depths of Ignihyde, something felt… off.

And Housewarden Shroud was nowhere to be found. Azul Ashengrotto smiled that sly smile he always has when something spikes his interest he simply looked up "my it seems shroud has gone missing again" malleus draconia looked over he simply thought the son of the shroud family missing? that sounds like my future husband went no malleus play it cool this is an arranged marragie nothing more.

FEW HOURS LATER

The doors to the Mirror Chamber creaked open.

Every head turned at once.

An Ignihyde student stumbled inside, slightly out of breath, tablet clutched to his chest like a shield. His uniform was crooked. His usually neat holographic visor flickered faintly.

Riddle Rosehearts straightened immediately.

“Well?” he demanded.

The student swallowed.

“I—I couldn’t find Housewarden Shroud anywhere.”

Silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that presses against your ears and makes your pulse loud.

“What do you mean you couldn’t find him?” Riddle’s voice sharpened to a blade’s edge. “Did you check his dorm room?”

“Yes, sir.”

“The common area?”

“Yes.”

“The underground server chambers?”

“Yes, sir!”

Vil closed his compact with a soft click.

“And?” he prompted, tone deceptively mild.

The student hesitated. “His room was… empty. The lights were on. His tablet was charging. One of his monitors was still running a simulation. But he wasn’t there.”

Leona shifted slightly, golden eyes opening just a fraction more.

“Hm.”

“That’s not all,” the student added nervously. “Ortho isn’t responding either.”

That made the air change.

Even Leona stood up properly.

“Repeat that,” Riddle said slowly.

“Ortho Shroud’s signal isn’t active. Ignihyde’s system can’t locate him.”

Riddle’s composure cracked for half a second.

“That is impossible. Ortho is always active.”

Vil’s gaze narrowed. “You’re certain?”

“Yes, Housewarden Schoenheit. It’s like… like both of them just vanished.”

The Mirror Chamber felt colder proably because malleus's face darkened as he thought my future husband is missing.

Leona exhaled through his nose. “So the shut-in ghosted reality itself. Figures.”

“This is not a joke, Kingscholar!” Riddle snapped.

Leona lifted his hands lazily. “Didn’t say it was.”

Riddle turned back to the trembling student. “When were they last seen?”

“Housewarden Shroud was in his room this morning. He logged into the campus network around dawn. After that… nothing. No movement. No pings. No magic signature.”

Vil’s brows knit together.

“No magic signature?”

“Yes. Ignihyde’s system tracks magical fluctuations in the dorm. There’s usually some trace. But for Housewarden Shroud, it just… cuts off.”

“Like a power outage?” Vil asked.

The student shook his head quickly. “No. More like—”

“Like it was severed,” came a calm voice from the doorway.

Azul Ashengrotto stepped forward, adjusting his glasses. Floyd and Jade followed at a leisurely pace seemingly they both appeared out of nowhere, clearly intrigued.

“Severed?” Riddle echoed.

Azul offered a polite smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

“A magical signature doesn’t simply disappear unless something interferes with it. Either a barrier was used… or something removed him from the range of detection entirely.”

“Removed him?” Riddle repeated.

Vil’s expression hardened. “Are you suggesting abduction?”

Floyd tilted his head. “Ooooh, kidnapped Shrimpy-haired gamer?”

“Floyd,” Jade warned gently.

Leona rolled his shoulders. “If someone kidnapped Shroud, they’d regret it. Ignihyde’s tech would hunt them down in five seconds.”

“That’s precisely the issue,” Azul replied smoothly. “If Ignihyde cannot find him… then whatever happened bypassed their systems entirely.”

Riddle pressed his lips into a thin line.

“Where is Kalim?” he asked suddenly.

The Ignihyde student blinked.

“Kalim Al-Asim left to assist in searching,” Vil supplied.

Riddle’s eyes widened slightly.

“You mean to tell me,” he said carefully, “that Kalim Al-Asim also left this chamber unsupervised… and has not returned?”

Silence again.

“Oh dear,” Jade murmured pleasantly.

Leona huffed. “The sunshine prince probably saw something shiny and wandered off.”

“Do not be flippant,” Vil snapped.

Riddle’s breathing sharpened.

“One Housewarden missing is a crisis. Two is negligence.”

Almost on cue, the doors opened again.

Everyone turned.

Another student stood there—this one from Scarabia, looking frazzled.

“H-Housewarden Al-Asim isn’t in the dorm,” he stammered. “We thought he returned to the ceremony hall, but he’s not there either.”

Riddle closed his eyes for exactly three seconds.

When he opened them, they burned.

“So. To summarize,” he said, voice unnaturally calm. “Housewarden Shroud has vanished without magical trace. Ortho Shroud is offline. And Housewarden Al-Asim has also disappeared.”

Leona muttered, “Yeah. That about covers it.”

Vil crossed his arms. “Kalim wandering off is one thing. But paired with Shroud’s disappearance… I don’t like the timing.”

Azul adjusted his glasses again, thoughtful.

“Coincidences are rarely coincidences.”

Floyd grinned. “Ooooh, conspiracy arc?”

Jade smiled faintly. “How exciting.”

Riddle turned sharply to the Ignihyde student.

“Seal the dormitory entrances. No one leaves campus without my permission.”

“Yes, sir!”

“Azul,” Riddle continued, “use your network of… contacts.”

Azul’s smile widened slightly. “With pleasure.”

“Vil, coordinate with the other dorm leaders. Leona—”

“I’ll check the outer grounds,” Leona cut in lazily. “If something dragged ‘em out there, I’ll smell it.”

Riddle hesitated, then nodded.

“And I will personally oversee a search of Ignihyde,” he declared.

Vil raised a brow. “You? In a technology dungeon?”

Riddle’s jaw set. “This is an official school matter.”

Behind them, the Dark Mirror shimmered faintly.

None of them noticed.

Deep within Ignihyde, a monitor flickered.

Lines of code scrambled and reformed.

On one screen, a fractured image appeared—like glass splitting from the center.

A voice echoed faintly through static.

“System breach detected.”

Then—

Black.

Back in the Mirror Chamber, tension coiled tighter.

Two Housewardens missing.

No magical trace.

No signal.

And somewhere, unseen, something had already begun to crack.

The ceremony was supposed to welcome new students.

Instead, Night Raven College was about to welcome something else entirely.
