Old Familiar Stranger

Summary:

Bellemere reconnects with an old friend, and finds they both have more in common now than they ever did when they were Marines.

Notes:

my working title is dead mom for dead mom. Love to unfridge a bitch. Anyway this is not my favorite interpretation of mama cora, but for the sapphic round i figured i may as well go full binary trans. broaden my horizons a bit. Roci's gender can still be kinda weird with it if you believe.

Work Text:

“Hey, stranger, got a light?”

Bellemere didn’t expect such an innocuous question to cause the tall woman outside the tavern to stiffen like she’d been shot.

“Belle—” the woman rasped, turning, and Bellemere nearly dropped her pack of smokes.

“Rocinante?”

“Roci, now,” she said, trying to hide behind her blonde fringe the same way she always had in the Navy. No uniform, anymore, arguably a bigger change than the new tits.

Or the munchkin.

“Noticed you had a little shadow back inside, he yours?”

“Well…”

“I get that. Wanna bring him to meet my girls? Y’all can stay at mine.”

“You really didn’t have to—”

“Naw, Roci, it’s nothing. I’m happy to see you again.”

Making Roci blush scarlet was even more fun now than it had been.

“Happy to see you made it out of there alive.”

“Ain’t that the truth. But I couldn’t leave the girls once I found ‘em.”

“It was like that with Law, you shoulda seen the shithole I dragged him out of.”

“Oh, was that why you left the service? Not…”

“Ha! No, although this was his fault too.” Roci gestured vaguely chestward. “He called me Mama Cora one time, and that was it.”
