Chapter Text
The Captain had been livid when the news made it to his desk that his team would be dismantled to serve as trainers for some of the officers in the precinct for a day. Brian Irons had remained in the shaded man’s office, the two basically having a screaming match while the S.T.aR.S. Alpha team remained relatively quiet in their workspace outside. Chris had given Jill several looks of concern as it sounded like things were being thrown, or fists were slammed, into wood or faces he honestly wasn’t sure, but she had just raised a hand and shaken her head as if to say “you don’t want to know.” After nearly an hour with the unit trying, and failing, to get some work done amid the aggressive chaos in the enclosed office, the door finally opened.
“I’ll have the approved listing sent up a bit later,” The chief of police looked more sweaty than usual as he exited the room and made a beeline for the door that would take him to the stair. Chris could see the ire radiating from his own Captain, irritation making a few of his strands of blonde hair stick out at various angles as he made his way around his desk and toward his closing door. Before the latch could catch, he opened the door fully and stepped out, smoothing his facade of calm back into place with a swipe of his hair as he addressed his team.
“Due to a request from the city, you will be relieved of standard duty tomorrow morning and will instead be assigned an officer each, who you are to train as if they would be joining our team. You will all have the remainder of the evening to come up with a training plan for your specific partner. I expect it in my hands for approval before any of you even think about leaving this office. Do I make myself clear?” A round of “Yes Sir!” went throughout the office before Captain Wesker breathed a sigh and returned to his office, nearly slamming the door behind him. Shortly after the interaction, Irons’ secretary brought up the paperwork advising who would be assigned to who and, after verifying its approval with the darkly shaded man, made her way out into the office to pass the information out to the S.T.aR.S. unit.
Jill looked over at Chris and waved the picture of her trainee with a raised brow, wondering who he had been assigned. Chris looked down at the file for Leon Scott Kenendy and held up his own picture of the younger man with a half cocked grin. Jill gave him a rather jealous expression, glancing around to make sure the rest of the team was preoccupied with their own trainee’s files before rolling her chair closer to Chris.
“I can’t believe you got the cute new guy. Looks like they paired me up with the only woman. Shocking, I know,” She said with a rather sarcastic roll of her eyes.
“Hey, she looks cute too. Don’t be mean just because you’re jealous that I got the best one,” Chris gave her a sideways grin, raising his shoulder as she gave him a playful punch.
“So, what should we do for them? I was thinking an obstacle course for mine. Maybe use the old training grounds that they were thinking of demolishing downtown?” Jill inquired as she leaned back in her seat and looked over her trainee’s information curiously.
“That could be good. I was thinking an interrogation for Officer Kenendy. Might help if he’s ever in that kind of situation and it’s not something they usually go into a lot of detail on,” Chris mused, glancing down at the younger man’s notes curiously.
“I like that. I think there’s an old shed in the training grounds I mentioned that could serve as a good spot for it,” The woman rolled back over to her desk and rummaged around in her filing cabinet for a moment before coming back with a rather dirty looking old map. She unfolded it on top of her coworker’s desk and dusted it off a bit, pointing out the building she had been referring to.
“See?” Chris nodded, seeing that it was a decent distance from the obstacle course she was wanting to use, so even if they were both there at the same time, their training shouldn’t interfere with each other.
“I think this is a good idea. You wanna tell him first or you want me to go in and soften him up first?” Jill smirked, knowing the blonde would likely be even more aggressive with Chris than usual due to his recent aggravation with the police chief.
“What if we go in together? Maybe that’ll keep him calmer,” Chris suggested, pleased when Jill gave a shrug and moved to pick up her trainee’s file and the map as the other man did the same. They made their way toward the door, pausing after a knock until they heard a sigh and received permission to enter.
Wesker looked like he was on the verge of a migraine, the amount of paperwork on his desk, though very neatly organized and stacked, was truly monumental. It always threw Chris off that the older man never asked for help with any of it unless he was absolutely drowning, but decided it was probably best for everyone that way with how particular the man was about every minute detail. Their superior was currently holding one of the papers up while typing something onto his personal computer with his opposite hand. The two S.T.aR.S. agents remained quiet until the blonde replaced the paper he had been looking at and gave them his undivided attention.
“You’ve both finished the training plans for your assigned officers?” He asked with a raised brow, seeming suspicious even though neither of them had done anything to warrant it.
“Yes Sir. We were thinking about using the old training grounds for our separate training sessions,” At Jill’s mention of their separation in spite of using the same location, Wesker seemed to soften on the idea a bit. Chris reasoned he must have initially believed they were trying to cut corners by working together and was likely preparing the chewing out of the century. When Jill had finished presenting her idea for how she planned an obstacle course for her trainee, Chris stepped in and advised of his idea for an interrogation for his own. Wesker seemed indifferent to both of the ideas, which honestly was the best thing that either of them could have hoped for. The man’s default emotions typically seemed to be unbridled fury and mild irritation at the best of times, so indifference was a major step up.
“I think these both seem like good ideas suited to each of your specified officers. You have my approval. I would advise spending the remainder of the evening speaking with your assigned trainees to prepare them for the trials tomorrow. Dismissed,” With the curt dismissal, Jill and Chris retreated back to their desks before giving victorious little fist pumps, high fiving each other for being the first two out of the office.
“You both suck, you know that?” Joseph called after them as they exited the office, both offering shit-eating grins and waving. Making their way down the staircase and into the bowels of the precinct, they managed to run into their prospective trainees relatively quickly, as they also shared the same office space. Jill introduced herself to Rita and the two walked toward the door and out into the hall to further discuss what they would be working on tomorrow, leaving Chris and Leon with another officer.
“Hey, I’m Leon Kennedy. Nice to meet you,” Leon introduced himself to the larger man with a pleasant smile, looking altogether adorable.
“Likewise. Chris Redfield. I’ll be conducting your training in the morning. Uh, shall we?” Chris stepped back, gesturing rather awkwardly toward the same hall that Jill had taken Rita down. Leon nodded, moving to stand from his desk a bit too quickly without having rolled his chair back, bumping his legs into the underside and causing some papers to scatter onto the ground.
“Shit, I’m sorry! Just, give me a sec,” The smaller man rolled his seat back and immediately fell to his knees to collect the fallen files as well as a stapler that had landed on the ground as well.
“I’m not usually this messy, I swear,” Chris chuckled down at the officer who looked up, realizing the position the two were in with rapidly heated cheeks. He was staring at the taller man’s belt, definitely his belt and nothing else, for a moment, swallowing dryly before shaking his head and standing too quickly, knocking his shoulder into the underside of the desk with a hiss of pain. Chris stepped back, legitimately concerned for the other man now as the paperwork and stapler were returned to the desk before he brought up the other hand to rub at the undoubtedly sore shoulder.
“You good there, Rookie?” Chris tried to ask, noticing how the other man tensed even more at the nickname, his cheeks growing closer to red than the pink they had previously been stained.
“Y-Yea, I’m doing great! How about we go to the hallway right? That’s where we were heading,” Leon spoke quickly, basically running toward the door with Chris following a few steps behind. In the hall, the smaller man had seemed to catch his breath and turned back to smile at the taller with a slightly less red face. Chris was enamoured; this guy was fucking adorable.
“So, we’ll be doing a training exercise tomorrow to run you through some of the things our team might run into and how we would handle them. We’re not doing anything too crazy, but I would recommend bringing a change of clothes just in case,” Chris went on detailing the interrogation scene they would basically be playing out and how he would show Leon just what he needed to do in the event he were ever in that situation for real. Leon nodded along, paying rapt attention to the larger man, only interrupting to verify a couple things such as the address and if they would be meeting at the precinct or heading directly there the following morning. Chris answered every question patiently, smiling and laughing a couple times when the rookie made a pun about one of the things he had said. Damn, the man was charming in addition to his good looks.
“Alright, you got all that, Rookie?” The pink tinge returned to Leon’s cheeks, but he nodded nonetheless as they reached the beginning of the hallway they had entered, having completed the loop.
“Yes Sir. I look forward to meeting with you bright and early,” Chris cleared his throat and nodded in agreement, the addition of Sir weirdly doing something for him with how the other man wrapped his lips around the word. Before anything else got weird, the two shook hands and parted ways, both needing a minute to cool off after talking to someone who was exactly their type.
