Sanji wakes up, after dreaming about killing his character in a videogame, almost pressed against the semi-cold wall. Zoro is snoring by his side, his shirtless back facing him, and their orange cat, Ichimonji, is at the top of his head, curled up on himself, using part of his pillow and part of Zoro's pillow.
He blinks slowly, trying to adjust his eyes to the bright light (times like this he regrets choosing white curtains for the bedroom, but Zoro never complained).
A constant pain is already installed in his head, not enough to make him take any medication, but also enough to not let him sleep any longer, even when he barely had any last night.
Sometimes, he hates so much being an early bird and envies Zoro's ability to sleep through anything, saved for when the cat wakes him up in the middle of the night for food, which is curious since Sanji is a light sleeper and never ever hears the door being open or Zoro and Ichimonji leaving the bedroom at two in the morning (as brute as Perona and Sanji like to call Zoro, he is delicate too, he must admit that).
The cat moves from the top of the pillows to install himself over Sanji's chest, in an attempt to get him up for more food. He purrs and meows softly, also careful to not wake the other human on the bed.
The blond wonders how clever the cat really is as he pets his back.
At this hour in the morning, with his gears half-functioning and his vision blurry, he thinks of their younger version. He remembers the first time he and Zoro slept together (proper sleep, nothing sex-related), they weren't even alone. A trip with friends ended with them, Nico, Franky, Law and Luffy sharing a cabin with only three beds and a bathroom.
They weren't even together back then, but a series of unfortunate events (Sanji kicked someone and hurt his ankle, which led to Zoro carrying him back and looking for ice in the middle of the jungle) made them sleep in one bed for that second night (and for the rest of them).
Zoro offered his arm as a pillow, and Sanji was hugging him. Zoro’s arm was cramping after a while, numb under the weight of the blond. Sanji was sweating endlessly, the swordsmith’s body radiating too much heat for it to be comfortable. But neither of them moved (not even when Zoro almost yelled in Sanji's ear because he was telling Luffy to be quiet because the blond was asleep).
They rarely sleep facing each other now, even when it just implies switching sides.
Their bed is in the corner of the room, because when Sanji was a teenager living with his dad, his bed was also in a corner and he got used to sleeping with at least a limb touching it to regulate his temperature. Zoro didn't care about taking whichever side of the bed Sanji didn't want.
Switching sides implies Sanji not having his wall, and that is a complete no for Zoro.
Not because Sanji complains endlessly about the heat, though he does (hotels are awful without his emotional support wall) and definitely not because Zoro gets less space. It's only because Sanji won't be comfortable, and Zoro can't stand that.
Sanji stands up from the bed, trying his best to not wake up Zoro in the process, while Ichimonji is waiting for him at the door, knowing too well it's time for his second breakfast.
“Hey, be quiet. Your dad is asleep” Sanji and Zoro decided not to have children, but they adopted a cat. He walks barefoot, he used to wear slippers but Zoro is always skipping them (and the love of his life sweeps daily so Sanji can enjoy walking on the wooden floor without worrying about getting his feet dirty). “Let's go”
Zoro won't wake up in a few hours, enough time for Sanji to enjoy time inside his head and analyze his life while feeding the cat and brewing some coffee.
Ichimonji waits for him at the exact same place he does every morning. Even when it’s practically Zoro's cat, the one who keeps him company at the workshop when Sanji isn't home, he always asks the blond for food because he knows he's weaker, the damn cat. And how could he not? He meows so softly, even when it's just a perfected trick, he even paws at him.
“Here, take two bites and go back to sleep, you little brat” he always does that anyway.
While Ichimonji disappears into the bedroom, Sanji turns on the music on his phone on low volume to not wake Zoro up. He washes the dishes from the dinner before he opens the refrigerator to decide what they're going to have for breakfast (Zoro hates to pick what to eat, and Sanji wants to make his life easier).
The coffee is already brewing and he has something on the oven (he always says it is something quick, but the preparation takes at least half an hour) when he hears Zoro’s footsteps walking to the bathroom.
He smiles softly, taking the volume up two points.
