The heavy oak doors of the royal bedchamber shut out the relentless demands of the Jeon Empire, leaving Jeongguk in a rare, sacred silence.
The chamber was a sprawling testament to both his lineage’s might and his mate’s refined grace. Massive stone walls, built to withstand centuries of sieges, were softened by heavy silk tapestries in deep shades of crimson and midnight blue. A massive hearth crackled in the corner, casting a warm, amber glow across the polished dark wood floors. In the center of the room sat the grand alpha’s bed, a sprawling expanse of plush furs and silks that had, over the last year, been meticulously transformed. Jimin had scented and woven his own soft linens into the bedding, turning a stark, kingly berth into a warm, inviting nest. The air was thick and sweet with their blended scents: Jeongguk’s grounding, smoky cedarwood and Jimin’s soothing, blooming jasmine.
He unbuckled his heavy leather vambraces, letting them clatter onto a side table, and sighed. The weight of the crown was nothing compared to the sudden, sharp knot of anxiety tightening in his chest as his eyes landed on the bed.
The soft candlelight caught the silver embroidery of Jimin's loose robes, draped elegantly over a noticeably rounded belly. Jimin. His mate. His Omega. His husband. Mother of his pup.
Jimin was stitching a tiny, quilted tunic, his fingers moving with practiced grace. Sensing his alpha’s return, he looked up, a soft, radiant smile gracing his features. "You are late tonight."
Jeongguk shed his outer formal robe and crossed the room, his larger frame moving with quiet intensity. He climbed onto the bed, sinking into the nest, and immediately pulled Jimin back against his chest. His large hands found their familiar, rightful place, resting gently over the swell of Jimin’s stomach. A soft purr rumbled deep in Jeongguk's throat as he buried his face into the crook of Jimin’s neck, inhaling the calming jasmine scent.
"The council was tedious", Jeongguk murmured, his voice laced with an unusual tiredness.
Jimin leaned back into the embrace, placing his smaller, delicate hands over Jeongguk’s. But the omega’s instincts were sharp. He felt the tension stiffening the alpha’s broad shoulders, sensed the faint, bitter edge of anxiety bleeding into the cedarwood scent.
"What is troubling you, my love?", Jimin asked softly, turning his head slightly to press a kiss to the alpha’s jaw. "The borders are secure. The harvest is plentiful. Yet your mind is a battlefield tonight."
Jeongguk quieted, his fingers lightly tracing the curve of their unborn pup beneath the silk. He felt terrifyingly small. He was not the unyielding king who commanded armies and ruled over a prospering kingdom, whenever he was with his mate, within the serenity of their chamber.
"They spoke of lineage today", Jeongguk confessed, his voice dropping to a vulnerable whisper. "Of heirs. Of training the next alpha king." He paused, his grip tightening just a fraction, out of protectiveness, not malice. "Jimin... I know how to lead an army. I know how to execute traitors and sign treaties. My father taught me how to be a ruler through iron and blood."
Jimin stayed quiet, listening intently, his thumb soothingly stroking the back of Jeongguk's hand.
"But I do not know how to be a father", Jeongguk breathed out, the raw admission tearing from his throat. "The pup...what if I am too harsh? What if the cruelty required to keep this kingdom safe bleeds into how I raise them? I look at you, so gentle and perfect, and I fear my shadow will be too dark for a child to grow in."
A profound silence settled over the room, save for the crackle of the hearth. He held his breath, terrified of his own weakness being laid bare.
Jimin shifted in his arms, turning around completely to face him. He reached up, his warm palms cupping his face, forcing the alpha to look into his soft, crescent eyes."Look at me, Jeongguk", Jimin commanded gently, his voice carrying the fierce, undeniable authority of a loved mate. "You speak of your father’s iron rule, but you are not him. An arranged marriage brought us together, yes, but it was your patience, your gentleness, that won my heart. I have seen you spare villages. I have seen you weep for fallen soldiers."
Jimin took one of Jeongguk’s large, calloused hands– hands that held swords and signed death warrants– and pressed it firmly against his swollen belly. Right on cue, a small, distinct flutter kicked against Jeongguk's palm. His breath hitched, eyes widening.
"Our pup does not need a perfect king", Jimin whispered, affection shone brightly in his eyes. "They need you. Their father. Your strength will protect them, and your soft heart will nurture them. You worry because you already love them more than your own life. That alone makes you a good father."
Jeongguk stared at his mate, the profound truth of the words settling over him like a protective cloak. For all his life, Jeongguk had been taught that strength was measured in the weight of a broadsword, the size of an army, or the absolute obedience of a court. But looking at Jimin, he realized he had been wrong.
True strength was the gentle, unwavering grace of the omega before him. Jimin was his anchor, the quiet gravity that kept his volatile alpha instincts from spinning into chaos. It astounded Jeongguk how a person so delicate, wrapped in fine silks and smelling of soft jasmine, held the power to completely disarm a warlord. With a single look, a soft touch, or a whisper of reassurance, Jimin could dismantle the fortress of anxieties Jeongguk built around himself. The crushing weight of the crown, the terrifying uncertainty of the future, all of it simply evaporated against the steady warmth of Jimin’s soul.
The knot in Jeongguk’s chest unraveled, washed away by the absolute certainty in his omega's voice. The fierce, terrifying world outside their chamber faded into insignificance, replaced entirely by the soft warmth of the nest they had built together.
Jeongguk leaned forward, pressing his forehead against Jimin’s, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "I would burn the world before I let harm touch either of you."
"I know," Jimin smiled, his thumb brushing a comforting path across Jeongguk’s cheekbone. "But you won't have to burn it. You are going to build a safer one for us instead.”
Jeongguk closed his eyes, letting his mate's words sink into his skin. A safer world. It was a beautiful, daunting thought. For so long, his mind had been trained to think only of defense, of borders, of striking before being struck. He looked down at Jimin’s rounded belly again, a profound wave of protectiveness washing over his alpha instincts. It wasn't the aggressive, destructive urge he felt on the battlefield; it was a quiet, enduring vow. He realized then that being a father wouldn't mean changing who he was as a king, it meant giving this pup a side of him that the rest of the world would never be privileged to see.
"Do you think..." Jeongguk started, his voice cracking slightly as he looked back up into Jimin's eyes. "Do you think they will look like you? I hope they inherit your eyes, Jimin. And your patience."
Jimin let out a soft, melodic laugh that seemed to chase away the last remnants of smoke from the hearth. "And have two of us manipulating you with a single pout? The kingdom wouldn't survive it, my love. I hope they inherit your strength. And your stubbornness, though I might regret saying that later."
"I am not stubborn", Jeongguk murmured against Jimin's temple, his lips twitching into a rare, genuine smile.
"You are a Jeon, it is in your blood," Jimin countered playfully, sliding his hands up to rest on Jeongguk’s broad shoulders. "But you are also kind. Never forget that part of yourself, Jeongguk. Our pup will need to see their father smile just as much as they need to see him wear a crown."
Jeongguk swallowed hard, a sudden warmth blooming in his chest. He thought of his own childhood, of stiff bows, cold corridors, and a father who only spoke to him of strategy and succession. He had never seen his father smile. He had never known what a parent's embrace felt like until he was already grown and looking at the omega who had been brought to his court in silk and political promises.
I will hold them, Jeongguk promised himself silently, his hand spreading wide over Jimin's warmth. I will praise them when they succeed, and I will catch them when they fall. They will never have to wonder if their father loves them.
"I will smile for them", Jeongguk whispered, making the vow out loud to the only person who held his heart. "Every single day. And I will teach them how to ride, and how to read the stars. I'll build them a garden where no ministers can bother them.”
"I know," Jimin smiled, leaning up to press a sweet, lingering kiss to the king's lips. "Now, come. Pull the blankets up. Your pup wants their father close tonight." With a softened heart, he pulled his mate close into the safety of their nest, holding his small family tight against the cold, indifferent world outside.
