Morning Light

Summary:

A lazy Sunday morning, a rumpled bed, and Jack and Sam with nowhere else to be - except wrapped up in each other. Passion, teasing, and plenty of reasons to stay in bed just a little longer.

Notes:

I may or may not have been reading a *lot* of smut lately (I'm looking at you, lilferret and blackcoffee13), and apparently some of it rubbed off. 😂
What can I say? Enjoy! 😇

Work Text:

Her consciousness returned gradually, like a wave slowly creeping up a shore.

Sam became aware of the warmth first - a solid, radiating heat along her back and side that had nothing to do with the blankets. Warmth that came from another person, from skin against skin, from a body that had spent the night curved protectively around hers.

She kept her eyes closed, unwilling to let go of this liminal space between sleep and waking, this precious moment where the world hadn't yet intruded with its demands and protocols and the careful distance they maintained everywhere else.

Here, in the quiet sanctuary of his bedroom, with dawn light barely beginning to creep through the curtains, she could simply be Sam. Not Major Carter, not the astrophysicist nor the officer who had to maintain professional boundaries. Just Sam, wrapped in Jack O'Neill's arms.

With every slow breath, his chest rose and fell against her, a steady movement she could feel through the thin barrier of skin and sheet. The weight was comforting rather than confining - an anchoring presence at her back.

His breath stirred the hair at the nape of her neck, steady and deep with sleep. She focused on the rhythm of it, the reliable cadence that had become as familiar to her as her own heartbeat over these past months.

In, out. In, out.

Each exhale was a warm whisper against her skin, raising goosebumps that had nothing to do with cold.

The faint rasp of his chest hair brushed against her skin whenever he shifted in sleep, soft and surprisingly intimate. Beneath it, his heartbeat moved in a slow, muted rhythm, not quite loud enough to hear but tangible where her back rested against him. She let herself settle into the shape of him, fitting as naturally as though she had been made for that space.

The arm draped over her waist was heavy with sleep, his hand splayed across her stomach, fingers relaxed. She could feel the calluses on his palm, earned from years of handling weapons and rough missions, now resting with unexpected gentleness against her bare skin. His other arm was halfway tucked beneath the pillow, and she was using it partly as a cushion, her cheek pressed against the warm muscle of his bicep.

Sam shifted slightly, just enough to feel the full contact of their bodies - his chest against her back, his legs tangled with hers beneath the sheets.

After so many years of careful distance, of measured words and professional restraint, the simple luxury of this closeness still amazed her. The weight of him, the solid reality of Jack O'Neill next to her in bed, without barriers or ranks between them.

A soft sound escaped him, something between a sigh and a hum, and his arm tightened around her waist reflexively, pulling her closer even in sleep. The gesture made her heart squeeze with an affection so fierce it almost hurt.

She'd seen him command teams through impossible situations, watched him make split-second decisions that saved worlds, witnessed his legendary stubbornness in the face of overwhelming odds. But this - this unconscious need to hold her close even while dreaming - this undid her completely.

Sam became aware of other small sounds filling the quiet room. The soft rustle of sheets when one of them moved. The faint creak of the bed frame. Outside, the distant song of early morning birds greeting the day.

But mostly, there was the sound of his breathing, sometimes catching slightly on what might have been the beginning of a snore before settling back into that steady rhythm.

The temptation to turn over, to see his face, grew stronger with each passing moment.

She resisted and stayed exactly as she was, eyes still closed, body still curved into the warm shelter of his body.

After a moment, she pressed her hip back more firmly, a deliberate, slow grind against the soft cotton of his boxers. The contact was immediate and unmistakable. Beneath the thin fabric she felt him - already half-hard, then rapidly thickening, the heavy length of him growing solid and insistent against the cleft of her ass.

A low, sleepy sound rumbled in his chest, half-moan, half-sigh. The hand that had been resting open on her stomach shifted, fingers spreading wider as his palm settled more firmly against her skin.

Sam kept the pressure steady, rolling her hip in a slow, circling motion. She felt the exact moment sleep began to leave him: his breathing changed, grew less even, and the arm beneath the pillow flexed. His other hand slid upward, palm gliding over her ribs until it closed around her breast, cupping the soft weight of it. His thumb found her nipple and stroked, lazy and possessive.

His mouth found the back of her neck. Warm lips parted against her skin, the scrape of morning stubble sending a sharp shiver straight down her spine. She felt the shape of his smile more than saw it, the quiet recognition that she was awake and willing and already wet for him.

They usually slept naked. Both of them preferred it that way - the unbroken warmth of skin against skin, whether anything more happened or not. Last night had been no different at first. They had fallen into bed tangled and half-laughing, already bare, the sheets kicked halfway down the mattress.

Then Jack had remembered the security light on the back porch was still on. He had sworn softly, sat up, and pulled on the nearest pair of boxers before climbing out of bed. Barefoot, he had padded downstairs, flipped the switch, and come back up.

By the time he returned, Sam was already asleep. The week had been relentless - long hours, back-to-back briefings, and more problems than solutions - and the exhaustion had finally caught up with her. He had simply slid in behind her without bothering to strip again.

Now the cotton was only an annoyance. Sam reached behind her, found the soft fabric of his boxers, and let her fingers slide along the waistband until she caught it. She gave a small, clear tug. A wordless request.

She felt him still for a second, then the solid heat of his body left her back as he leaned away just enough to shove them down his thighs. A brief, clumsy wriggle, fabric sliding, then he was back - skin to skin, the thick, hot length of his cock settling into the cleft of her ass, already slick at the tip.

He pressed a slow kiss to the side of her neck, then let his right hand glide down over the curve of her cheek and lower still. From behind, he slipped his fingers between her folds, stroking through the wetness he found there - slow and deliberate, coating himself in her.

The soft, wet sound of his fingers moving against her made her breath catch. She was soaked, aching, every slow pass of his fingers sending a sharp pulse of need through her. She was more than ready - she needed him inside her. A moment later, he withdrew his hand.

The sudden absence made her almost whimper. The cool air against her wet folds was a stark contrast to the heat of his fingers, and the emptiness that followed felt almost cruel. She needed him back - needed more than just the brief, teasing touch he had given her.

Sam bent her right knee and drew it up and forward, opening herself to him in silent invitation.

His left arm stretched out and Sam settled her head against it, the solid warmth of his biceps cradling her cheek. He shifted lower, the broad head of his cock sliding down until it nestled against her opening.

His other hand slid beneath her bent knee, lifting and holding her open even wider. He waited, motionless, the blunt head of him resting right there - a silent, deliberate question.

She was so wet, so aching, every nerve drawn tight.

“Jack. Please, ” Sam murmured. Soft. Urgent. An invitation and a plea in the same breath.

She could smell him - his sleep-warm skin, a faint trace of soap but also the sharp scent of arousal rising between them.

He shifted down another fraction, adjusted the angle, and slowly pressed forward. The blunt head of his cock parted her, then sank deeper with steady, unrelenting pressure.

Sam’s mouth opened on a silent gasp as he filled her, inch by inch, the stretch familiar and overwhelming all at once.

His chest was flush to her back again, the fine hair there rasping against her skin with every shallow breath he took.

When he was fully seated - hips pressed tight to hers, the root of him pulsing inside her - he stopped again. Her own body clenched around him once, involuntary, and she felt the answering twitch of his cock.

There was only the thick, living heat of him buried to the hilt, the slow throb of his heartbeat against her inner walls, and the warm rush of his breath across the side of her neck.

They breathed together in the same shallow, trembling rhythm - hers catching, his controlled but fraying at the edges. Both of them balanced on the razor edge of something fierce and inevitable, every muscle taut with the effort of not moving, of holding the moment just a second longer before it broke.

Then Sam pushed back against him, a small, deliberate roll of her hips that pressed him even deeper. The silent plea was unmistakable. Only then did he begin to move.

Slow at first - deep, measured strokes that eased almost all the way out before sliding home again. The wet glide of him, the soft slap of skin, the quiet catch of her breath each time he bottomed out.

His hand left her stomach and returned to her breast, pinching the nipple lightly in time with his thrusts.

A soft, broken sound escaped her. One of her hands flew back to grip his hip, fingers digging in as if to pull him even closer, while the other clutched at the sheet in front of her.

Sam’s fingers dug hard into the muscle of his hip, silently urging him faster. He understood at once.

The rhythm shifted - harder, deeper, the bed frame giving a soft, rhythmic creak. His mouth opened against her neck, teeth grazing, his tongue tasting the salt of her skin.

She could feel the tension coiling in him, the way his thrusts grew less controlled, the low sounds he made against her neck.

Every deep stroke dragged against that perfect place inside her, thick and relentless, filling her so completely that she could scarcely tell where he ended and she began.

The pressure built higher with each thrust - tight, molten, climbing and climbing until it felt almost too much to hold. She was so close, balanced right on the edge, her body tightening around him in helpless little pulses as the pleasure wound tighter and tighter.

Sensing how close she was, Jack reached from behind, sliding his hand between her thighs. He began to stroke her clit in slow, deliberate circles, matching the rhythm of his thrusts. The gentle pressure was exactly what she needed - tender yet insistent - sending bright sparks of sensation racing through her.

His soft touch tipped her over the threshold. The climax crashed through her in a sudden, overwhelming wave, her walls clenching hard around him as she cried out, trembling, lost in the intensity of it. Pleasure rolled through her in long, pulsing waves.

Jack followed close behind. Three more deep thrusts, then he buried himself completely and held there, his cock jerking as he came, the hot flood of him spilling inside her while his arm locked tight around her waist and his breath stuttered against her neck. His lips settled there and stayed, soft and open, simply resting against her skin as the last pulses left him.

For several minutes neither of them moved. The room was quiet again except for the slowing of their breathing and the distant birds outside. Jack’s hand drifted slowly over her stomach, palm warm and heavy.

Sam kept her eyes closed, a small, unguarded smile curving her lips - utterly spent, utterly satisfied. She pressed back into the solid heat of him, aftershocks still ebbing into a deep, sated warmth. She didn’t want to lose the connection: he was still inside her, softened now, and the slightest shift would have let him slip free.

Jack’s fingers didn’t stay still for long. Slowly, almost absently, he began to stroke her stomach - warm, lazy passes over her soft skin. When her hand covered his, he stilled.

Sam’s fingers began to move instead, tracing the back of his hand in soft, rhythmic passes, then following the length of each finger, mapping the lines of his knuckles. The motion was gentle and hypnotic.

Jack felt the quiet repetition against his skin and let himself sink into it. The last traces of tension drained from his body. His breathing deepened first, evening out against the curve of her neck. A moment later hers followed, slower and slower, until both of them slipped under. She never turned. She stayed exactly as she was - back pressed to his chest, their hands still joined, his softened cock still resting inside her - as sleep took them.

——————————————————————————-

Sam woke slowly, the first thought that surfaced a quiet curiosity about the time. She opened her eyes and looked toward the window. The light pouring in was much brighter now - full and clear. Almost noon, she guessed.

Jack’s chin rested on the crown of her head, his arms wrapped tightly around her as if even in sleep he was afraid she might disappear. A soft smile curved her mouth as the memory of their lovemaking at dawn drifted through her: how instinctively their bodies had reached for each other, how little thought had been needed.

She listened to the calm, even rhythm of his breathing, then carefully turned her head to catch a glimpse of him behind her. At some point while they slept his cock had slipped out of her. She could feel it now - soft and warm against the small of her back.

Moving with deliberate care so as not to wake him, Sam began to shift in his arms. His hold loosened but didn’t let go; even asleep, his body answered hers, accommodating the turn with the ease of long familiarity.

When she finally faced him, the sight stole what remained of her breath. She was level with his throat. Just below the line of his clavicle the grey scatter of his chest hair began, and she loved it - loved the texture of it, the way it felt against her skin. For a moment she was tempted to lean in and run her lips over it. She resisted, choosing instead the rarer pleasure of simply watching him sleep. He was almost always awake before her.

One hand was still tucked under his own pillow, the other remained on her hip, his touch possessive even in unconsciousness.

Sam propped herself up on one elbow, simply watching him. Memorizing him.

In sleep, he looked younger somehow. His face was relaxed in a way she rarely saw during waking hours. The lines that bracketed his mouth and creased his forehead - marks left by years of command, loss, and impossible choices - were softened now, smoothed by the peace of sleep.

His hair, more silver than brown these days, was rumpled and sticking up at odd angles.

His lips, too, looked different without the tight line of command pressed into them. Softer, less guarded. Those lips could form an order in one breath and, in the next, curve into that private, crooked smile he saved for her alone. She wondered, not for the first time, how many words he’d swallowed rather than say, how many orders had worn those lines into him - and how many kisses it might take to smooth them away again.

She had studied stars, mapped galaxies, and solved equations that described the shape of reality. None of it had prepared her for the simple gravity of Jack beside her.

Sam thought about all the years of longing glances and careful words, of feelings locked away behind regulations and propriety. Of the ache that had lived in her chest every time she'd had to call him "sir" when what she'd wanted was to call him Jack. Of the nights she'd lain awake wondering what this might feel like - to wake up beside him, to see him vulnerable and unguarded, to have the right to touch him whenever she wanted.

The reality was better than anything she had imagined.

Unable to resist any longer, Sam stretched upward, the shift pulling her from the level of his throat until she could reach further up. She pressed a feather-light kiss to his temple. His skin was warm beneath her lips, and she lingered there, breathing in the scent of him - clean cotton and something indefinably Jack.

She felt him stir slightly, a small hum rumbling in his chest. Emboldened, she kissed his forehead, then the bridge of his nose. His eyebrows drew together slightly, and his lips curved into the barest hint of a smile. Still sleeping, but beginning to surface.

Sam smiled against his skin and continued her gentle assault, pressing soft kisses along his cheekbone, down to the corner of his jaw. His stubble was rough against her lips, that perpetual five o'clock shadow that appeared no matter how recently he'd shaved. She'd never thought she'd like the feel of it, but she'd been wrong about that, as she'd been wrong about so many things before Jack.

"Mmm." The sound was low and rough with sleep, more vibration than voice. His fingers flexed against her hip, pressing gently into her skin. "This is nice."

"You're awake," she murmured against his jaw.

"Not really." But his eyes were still closed, a smile playing at his lips. "I think I’m having a really good dream."

"Is that so?" She kissed the corner of his mouth, barely a brush of her lips against his.

"Yeah." His voice was thick and gravelly; it did absolutely unfair things to her pulse. "There's this beautiful woman, and she's kissing me, and I'm thinking I should probably wake up so I can kiss her back, but I don't want the dream to end."

"I have a solution to your dilemma," Sam whispered, and kissed him properly.

His response was immediate. The hand on her hip slid around to her back, pulling her closer as his lips moved against hers with increasing awareness. His other hand came up to cup her face, thumb stroking along her cheekbone as he kissed her with his thorough attention that made her forget about everything else.

When they finally broke apart, his eyes were open, dark brown and warm and focused entirely on her with an intensity that still made her breath catch.

“Good morning,” he said, his voice rough and low.

“Good morning,” she replied, unable to keep the smile from her face.

Jack’s hand traced lazy patterns on her back, his touch leaving trails of warmth in its wake. His brow furrowed slightly, the corner of his mouth twitching with sleepy uncertainty.

“Wait… that earlier - did I dream that? Or…?”

Sam’s smile turned distinctly cheeky. She brushed her thumb over his lower lip.

“Your dreams must be extremely detailed, then. Because this…” a small glance at the state of the bed “…doesn’t look imaginary.”

Jack’s grin was slow and unmistakably pleased. He caught her wrist lightly, keeping her hand against his mouth.

“So… would the lady care to leave a five-star review? Or should I ask for more detailed feedback?”

Sam’s eyes sparkled. “Oh, there’s always room for improvement.”

His hand slid down and delivered a soft, playful slap to her ass. “Noted. Challenge accepted.”

He settled back against the pillows, still grinning, his fingers returning to those lazy patterns on her back.

“How long have you been awake?”

“Not long. I was watching you sleep.”

One eyebrow arched. "Creepy, Carter."

She laughed, the sound soft in the quiet room. "You watch me sleep all the time."

"That's different. You're prettier." His thumb traced the curve of her cheek, his expression softening. "God, you're so beautiful in the morning."

Sam felt heat rise in her cheeks. After all this time, after everything they'd been through, he could still make her blush with a simple compliment. "Flatterer."

"Just honest." He leaned in and kissed her, slower this time. His hand tangled in her hair, tilting her head to deepen the kiss, and Sam melted into him with a soft sound of pleasure.

Jack fully awake now, fully present, kissing her with an attentiveness that made her forget everything else.

His lips moved against hers with practiced familiarity, knowing exactly how to make her sigh, where to touch to make her press closer.

Sam ran her hand up his chest, feeling the solid warmth of him, the steady beat of his heart under her palm. Her fingers traced the lines of old scars. She knew them all by now, had traced them with fingers and lips until they were as familiar as her own body.

Jack rolled them so she was on her back, his weight a welcome pressure as he settled over her. He broke the kiss to trail his lips along her jaw, down the column of her throat, and Sam arched into him with a soft gasp.

"Jack," she breathed, her hands sliding into his hair, holding him close.

He hummed against her collarbone, the vibration sending shivers through her. "I love when you say my name like that."

"Like what?"

"Like it's important." He lifted his head to look at her, his expression serious now despite the heat in his gaze. “Like I matter.”

Sam cupped his face in her hands, thumbs stroking along his cheekbones. "You do matter. You're everything."

Something flickered in his eyes - surprise, wonder, and a vulnerability that he showed to almost no one but her. "Sam….I…" He seemed to struggle for words, this man who usually had a quip for every situation.

She pulled him down into another kiss, pouring everything she felt into it - all the depth of her love, all the gratitude for having finally found their way here.

He responded with equal fervor until they were both breathless, wrapped completely in each other.

The light had grown stronger, bright and full as it spilled across the bed in clear golden bars - noon was already upon them - but neither of them noticed. The world outside could wait. Duty and responsibility and everything else would come calling soon enough, as they always did.

Jack pulled back just enough to rest his forehead against hers.

"I love you," he said quietly, the words a solemn promise.

"I love you too," Sam replied, her heart so full it felt like it might burst. "So much.“

His smile appeared slowly, transforming his face into something younger and almost unguarded. Sam touched his cheek, memorizing the warmth of him beneath her hand.

Then he was kissing her again, and she was lost in him, in the warmth of his body and the tenderness of his touch and the absolute rightness of this moment.

Beyond the curtains, Sunday had settled over the house. The light was bright now, spilling across the bed in broad, golden bars. Outside, the world was carrying on.

Somewhere, alarms were probably going off, missions were being planned, and crises were developing. The Stargate would activate, sending teams through to distant worlds, and soon enough they’d be called back to duty - to their respective roles as colonel and 2IC.

But not yet.

For a little longer, they remained tangled in the rumpled sheets, holding each other in the golden Sunday light.

And it was perfect.
