Work Text:
Legundo never wanted to be a vampire.
No, who was he kidding, he knew he’d said that far too many times already. It was written over and over again in languid handwriting, repeated until his worn mind was sick of the phrase.
I don’t deserve forever.
I will right my wrongs, then I will be gone.
I am a monster.
No variation lied. None told the full truth, either.
His true thoughts were hidden layered behind folds of his mind he wasn’t yet ready to unwrap. He knew they were there, of course, but he’d never wanted to even see their glimmer of promise.
Legundo was a monster. Monsters didn’t live to see the end of any story.
This was no story, though. This was life. Life bends and warps and goes all the wrong ways, including that of letting murderers and monsters live to see the sunrise. Life lets the worst of people bury their troubles between the supernatural and the natural. It lets them pretend to be human.
Then lets them outgrow their false human facade.
Legundo wasn’t human. He never quite would be, regardless of his beating heart and steady hands.
He may as well embrace it.
“Legs, you don’t…”
Owen’s voice broke at the end. The man cleared his throat, clearly trying to regain control of his expression.
Louis, across the bed, was silent.
“You don’t have to. I was being pissy last week, and I—”
Legundo shut him up with a gentle wave of his hand. “No, no, it’s not you. It never was.”
A brief pause. The doctor took a deep breath. Likely one of his last.
“I cannot run from what I am forever. Nor what I’ve done. With you, I at least have even the barest chance of revival.”
He looked up from his hands. One real emerald eye glimmered with heavy emotion, the other a mimic.
“Turn me. I’m ready.”
The starstruck, dizzyingly happy expression on both his lover’s faces was nearly enough to knock him backwards. He laughed softly as if there had been something said.
The only thing that he had left to do was reach for his own repent. Reach for his undeserved heaven, even if it meant leaving his sin below.
All he had to do was reach.
