I sit by myself in my room every day (and wonder why nobody wants to go play)

Summary:

Life has changed for Coraline.

Notes:

Day Three: Rain on Pavement

Title from the poem 'I'm lonely, So Lonely' by Kenn Nesbitt in the children's book My Cat Knows Karate.
It's actually a funny poem but this line was such a good match.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

A pattering of rain bumped against the glass of the window where Coraline sat staring forlornly at the garden. She sighed deeply, inexplicably bored. But she watched, as the rain hit and bounced off of the pavement and gathered together to create puddles. The garden, still incomplete, looked sad. All mud and no flowers. No life. Somehow Coraline found herself relating.

Things had changed a lot since the accident. Her parents worked more than ever, they moved into this strange “pink palace”, and her whole life had suddenly turned grey. It seemed, sometimes, that her parents had stopped… Well.

She sighed deeply again, somehow deeper than before, as though maybe if she kept sighing, someone might hear her and get rid of her troubles. But no one will. In this big house, in her bedroom, away from her parents who are busy typing away at computers, no one would hear her.

Except maybe one person would.

“Hello, Little Me.”
