Ilya hadn’t been sure how to feel when Shane had called him days before he was set to fly to Canada to spend two weeks of their summer together, as they had enjoyed the year before, only to be told not to come when he was supposed to, but two days later.
It’d been his last season with Boston and he was already feeling a bit wobbly about the total upheaval of his life, but being told Shane had a last minute addition to his schedule and would be out of town for a little and Ilya should push his flight to two days later then he had been set to arrive had been upsetting.
Ilya had felt a pain in his chest that he hadn’t wanted to examine, but as his new flight date approached his mood started going more and more sour.
He’d felt rejected and unwanted and unimportant and it didn’t matter that maybe none of that was rational. He’d been hurt that Shane had stolen two days with him away from Ilya when they got so few to begin with, and Shane was on such a tight self imposed schedule that they really couldn’t squeeze more than their planned two weeks together, in this summer.
It stung and Ilya felt so sad about the entire thing. He’d been ignoring Shane since agreeing to change his flight. He hadn’t answered any of his texts in four days. He was actually a little nervous that maybe Shane wouldn’t be there to pick him up because after sending his new flight information Ilya had gone dark. He was just so hurt and didn’t know how to communicate and share those hard emotions with Shane.
Stepping out of the airport he looked around and really prayed Shane was actually there. He was upset with him, but he’d missed him really badly. He scanned the pick up point, looking for Shane’s reliable, sensible Land Rover. When he saw it, a sigh of relief escaped.
Shane, who was standing next to the driver’s side in hat and sun glasses, waved him over, an easy smile on his face.
Ilya felt a sunny smile break across his face before he could get control of it, and started the short walk towards his boyfriend. “Hi,” he greeted, careful not to be too familiar with potential witnesses around.
“Hey, good flight?” Shane asked gesturing for Ilya to get in the car as he met him around the back and took his bags to put in the trunk.
“Yes, it was okay. Long.” Ilya shrugged, frowning as Shane took his bags. “I can carry my own bags, Shane.”
“Get in the car please.” Shane told him as he finished loading Ilya’s things.
“Shane…” Ilya protested, brows rising behind his sunglasses. He stood there for a long moment before climbing into the passenger seat, immediately playing with the window.
Shane got in after loading the car and shook his head. “Don’t break my window please, Ilya.”
“What? Is not broken, see?” Ilya rolled his eyes. “You are very boring, Hollander.”
“Please don’t play with the window. That’s how it breaks.” Shane told him, trying to have patience. Travel days were stressful. He knew that.
Ilya sighed but moved his hands away from the window button. He cranked up the air con before looking out the window.
Shane lowered the air back down to a reasonable level and shook his head. They weren’t ending this day without a spanking. He could already tell.
“What are you doing, Hollander? Is too hot.”
“It doesn’t need to blow that hard, Rozanov.”
“Is too hot.” Ilya grumbled again but he held his hands up in defeat.
“Give yourself a minute to cool down.” Shane shook his head.
Ilya glanced at him and smiled. “Thank you, my Shane.” He stuck his face in the path of the A/C, panting like a dog for a minute before reluctantly turning it down.
Shane discreetly turned one of his vents to face Ilya before setting off out of the airport.
Ilya didn’t notice at first, closing his eyes and trying to breathe. He was finally back with his Shane, and it felt a little better now. He still hated that they’d lost days though. Days!
“Are you hungry? We can grab something. You know how long the drive is.” Shane asked he wasn’t sure if Ilya had gotten much if anything to eat on the plane.
“If you want,” Ilya answered carefully, voice non-committal.
“I’m asking you. Have you eaten? Are you hungry?”
“No I have not eaten, Hollander, is not easy to buy dinner on plane,” Ilya snapped sarcastically.
Shane split us focus between driving and Ilya’s little snit. “That’s why I asked, we can go through a drive through. We don’t need an attitude.” He warned.
Ilya rolled his eyes again, but nodded. “Yes, drive through is good. Unless you want me to eat you by side of road.” Ilya smirked.
Shane groaned. “Behave.”
Ilya just wiggled his eyebrows, feeling pleased with himself.
“Cut it out, what would you like to eat?” Shane didn’t love getting him fast food, but it was the only real way to feed him right now and he’d never demand Ilya stay hungry to appease Shane’s own diet demons.
“Whatever is easy, Shane, I don’t know. Fuck,” Ilya scowled at the dashboard. “Maybe burgers?” He suggested after a moment of silence, realising Shane would just wait him out.
“Attitude, Ilya.” He admonished as he headed towards the nearest McDonald’s.
Ilya felt his jaw tighten at being told off. Of course he was in trouble after Shane had already cut their time at the cottage short.
Shane reached a hand out and settled it calmly on Ilya’s knee, giving a little squeeze of reassurance.
The little act was enough to help Ilya relax as they headed for McDonalds.
Shane got into the long early evening line at the drive through. “What would you like to eat?” He asked.
Ilya thought about it for a moment and listed his order, adding on extra nuggets to annoy Shane, knowing he wouldn’t refuse.
Shane shook his head fondly and ordered his brat his supper when it was their turn.
The fried food did improve his mood a little, more than he expected. He hadn’t realised how hungry he was until now.
Shane grinned to himself as he watched Ilya demolish his massive dinner out the corner of his eye, as he drove off towards the cottage.
When he’d finished, Ilya perked up for a bit. It was kind of nice to be reunited, he had to admit. He could listen to Shane talk all day.
Until he got bored.
Shane reached out and squeezed his knee again. “I’m glad you’re here now. I missed you.”
“Not enough to not cut this short.” Ilya grumbled under his breath.
“Ilya what?”
“Nothing…” Ilya grumbled more louder this time. He reached for the in-built stereo to change the music.
Shane smacked his hand away. “No, let’s talk about this instead of being a massive brat.”
“Is nothing Shane. I said is nothing. I say nothing.” Ilya huffed.
“Ilya, what is this about?” Shane asked.
“Nothing.” Ilya insisted glaring out the window.
“Ilya…”
“Forget it, Hollander. Is stupid.”
“Come on, Ilya just tell me what’s wrong?” Shane pushed.
Instead of answering, Ilya turned towards the window, effectively turning his back towards his boyfriend. He knew it was childish but he was mad. Then, impulsively, he reached for his Coke and slurped the drink loudly, knowing Shane hated it.
Shane clenched his jaw, but tried to ignore him. He wasn’t going to take the bait this time.
Ilya frowned, a little disappointed not to get a rise. He wracked his brain for something else to do.
Shane tightened his hold on the steering wheel and concentrated on driving. He was not going to let Ilya get to him right now.
Ilya slouched a little, disappointed Shane was so unbothered. He pulled out his phone, hoping it would calm him down. When that didn’t work he huffed and reached for his jacket pocket where he’d slung it in the backsight, pulling out a packet of cigarettes. He wound the window down and took his time getting his lighter out, ignoring Shane the whole time.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Shane demanded in a clipped tone.
“What, you don’t have eyes now?” Ilya asked easily. “Smoking, is hard to have cigarettes on commercial flights, Hollander.”
“You told me you quit.” Shane ground out through clenched teeth.
“Yes, mostly. Is only when I am stressed.” Ilya shrugged. “I will be fast.”
“Absolutely not. Put that away right now.”
“What? Is fine, is just one silly cigarette, Hollander.” Ilya waggled his eyebrows and lifted the cigarette and lighter towards his mouth.
“Ilya Rozanov! Don’t. You. Dare!”
His heart stuttered at the tone of Shane’s voice but he didn’t back down. He was upset with Shane, it wasn’t his fault.
“Don’t make me pull this car over…” Shane warned. “You will be very unhappy if I have to…”
“Ah, you would not do this, Hollander. There are other cars around.” Ilya rolled his eyes.
“Try me.” Shane’s eyes narrowed.
Ilya took a drag of the cigarette, smirking as he leaned out the window so the car didn’t get smokey.
“Right.” Shane nodded and pulled off the main road down an empty side rode and pulling off entirely. He put the car in park, turned it off and got out, storming around to Ilya’s side and yanking the door open.
Ilya barely had time to register the car slowing, yet alone do anything to stop Shane wrenching his door open. “Hollander, wait…”
Shane said nothing. He grabbed the cigarette from Ilya’s mouth and put it out under his foot before tugging his boyfriend out of the car.
“Shane!” Ilya protested, trying to get some purchase as he found himself moving abruptly. Okay, this wasn’t how he’d expected things to go, and now he was regretting this idea deeply.
As quickly as Ilya was stood up he was bent over and held under Shane’s strong arm, the other hand coming down hard on his backside.
Ilya gasped, utterly incredulous. “What are you doing, solnyshko?!”
“Don’t solnyshko me, you know exactly what I’m doing and why.” Shane brought his hand down again and again, finding a punishing rhythm.
“You are overreacting, Shanya! Is only one cigarette…” Ilya squirmed as best he could, a little shocked by how firm it was.
“You aren’t supposed to have any.” Shane reminded as he danced his hand around Ilya’s bottom.
“Ow! Shane!”
“Yes?”
“Too hard!” Ilya insisted, desperately trying to twist away from the swats.
Shane just smacked his bottom again knowing full well his brat thought any swat was too hard.
Ilya yelped and pushed his hand back as best he could, hating this turn of events. “Hollander! Someone might see!”
“No one is here but if you don’t stop I can give them something to see.” Shane warned, resting his hand on the waistband of Ilya’s pants threateningly. He knew no one came down this road. Ilya didn’t know that though.
A strangled sound escaped Ilya’s throat and he twisted as best he could to check no cars were nearby. “No! Shane, no. Is not necessary…” he promised. “I will stop!”
Shane wrapped his arm around him tighter and went back to spanking.
Ilya just groaned, trying to still his squirming as much as he could. His boyfriend was very efficient at spanking, for all Ilya did the majority of spanking between them.
Shane spanked him till he was sure he’d feel it sitting the rest of the ride to the cottage.
The Russian was sniffling, shifting on the balls of his feet uncomfortably as the sting built in his ass. “Sorry! Shane, I am sorry! Honest!”
Shane gave two more hard smacks before pulling him up into a hug. “We will talk about what this was really about in the car.”
Ilya sniffled, tucking his face against Shane’s collarbone and clinging on tightly. His ass hurt now, and his heart hurt. He didn’t know how to tell Shane that it made him feel so unbelievably sad to lose two days with him. He always missed him so much.
Shane squeezed him tight and rubbed his back. “Whatever it is, we’ll figure it out together.” He promised.
That was a little comforting and drew a nod from Ilya who held on just a little tighter for a moment. “I missed you,” he admitted into Shane’s neck.
Shane kissed his head. “I missed you too.”
“You cancelled two days…” Ilya murmured into his neck, feeling just vulnerable enough to be honest while he wasn’t looking at Shane. “Made me feel very sad.”
“Oh,” Shane said softly. “I didn’t do it because I wanted to and I didn’t mean to make you sad. I was sad to lose the days too.”
“Yes?” Ilya asked, tucking himself impossibly closer. It felt a little better to hear Shane say he that, he’d seemed so calm about it all.
Shane wrapped his arms so tightly around him letting him cuddle close without rushing. “Yeah, I was kind of pissed when Rolex contacted me about it, but you can only push back so much while remaining polite and keeping them happy so they don’t dump you.”
Ilya sighed. “I know. Was important to go, I know that. But it still felt bad, like maybe was bad of me to come to cottage when you have better things to do…” he tried to explain.
“No! There's never better things.” Shane told him firmly.
“Shane…” Ilya sniffed, rubbing at his eyes. He knew it was stupid to be so demanding like this. “At least we are together now.”
Shane smiled down at where Ilya had curled himself tight and small against his chest. It was a wonder to Shane how in these moments Ilya sought to be as small as he could for Shane to hold and cuddle. “Yes we are, but can you do me a favor? Can you check your return flight?”
Ilya frowned against Shane’s chest. “Why?” He asked, starting to feel nervous again, panic bubbling up in his chest. Had he been so bad in the car Shane wanted him to leave sooner? He hoped not. He’d missed his Shane so much. They’d already missed two days. His heart ached and he felt anxiety claw his stomach at the thought of losing more time all because he couldn’t be good.
Please don’t make me go home sooner, he begged in his head.
Shane gently ran his fingers through Ilya’s curls. “Please just check. For me?”
Who was Ilya to refuse his Shane anything? He nodded, rubbing a hand over his eyes to remove the evidence of his tears. “Oke,” he agreed softly, though he dreaded doing as he’d been told.
“Thank you.” Shane let Ilya get his phone.
Ilya pulled it out of his pocket and reluctantly opened the app looking for his flight details.
Shane rubbed his back as he scrolled through his flight reservation information.
As he got further through the page, his brows drew together in confusion. “This isn’t right information, is wrong date…” he muttered, clicking the button to contact customer services. The return flight had somehow been pushed two weeks later than it should have been. Ilya didn’t need this right now.
Shane grabbed his phone and hung it up. “Calm down, sweetheart. It’s correct.” He assured.
“How…?” Ilya asked, looking confused.
“I know people…” he shrugged.
Ilya’s eyes darted up to his, glistening with unshed tears. “What did you do, Hollander?”
“I know you don’t keep the tight summer schedule I do and I know you don’t need to be back in Boston just yet except to pack for your move. I rearranged my schedule, as long as I use the home gym it won’t mess with me too much, and I’d rather have more time with you. I arranged with a moving company to get your place packed and moved, I also arranged to have your cars driven up, you don’t have to go back to Boston, you can just move straight into your new place from here,” Shane told him. “Then I asked dad to pull some strings to change your ticket. I wanted you to have a ticket home just in case you wanted to check anything at your Boston place before the final move, but we can also arrange to get you a credit for the home flight.”
Ilya stared at him as the words registered. He felt the tears that had been burning the back of his eyes win against him, and start to fall down his cheeks. “You did all this for me?” He asked in awe, hating how choked he sounded.
Shane reached out and wiped a tear in concern. “Did I do something wrong?”
“No,” Ilya insisted, shaking his head quickly. A smile tugged at his lips and he looked at Shane in awe. “You thought of everything, Hollander. For me.”
“Of course for you. Ilyusha, I love you so much. I was really sad to lose two days too and it made me realize I didn’t want to give hockey more of my summer than I gave you. Making an extra two weeks work felt like maybe we always should have had that time.” Shane admitted.
Ilya was still a moment more before he was wrapping Shane in a bone crushing hug. “Ya tebya lyublyu,” he murmured against the shell of Shane’s ear. “So very much. Thank you. This is the best news.”
“I just wanted to surprise you. I didn’t realize how hurt you were or I would have let you know sooner.” Shane squeezed him back.
Ilya held on tight, kissing the side of his face. “You are perfect, my Shane. This is the best summer ever.” He sighed. “I am sorry, for the cigarette.”
“I just want you healthy. You know it’s dangerous. I never meant to hurt you though.” Shane kissed the side of Ilya’s face.
Ilya melted back into his embrace enjoying letting Shane hold him. “Sorry. I couldn’t find words for how I was feeling.”
“I can’t read your mind.” Shane reminded him, rubbing his back.
“I know. I am sorry.” Ilya sighed against his neck.
“I know, we’re okay.”
Ilya smiled, shifting to kiss Shane. “Cottage now, moy lyubimyy?”
Shane nodded and helped Ilya back into the car.
Ilya shifted in his seat, trying to get comfortable. His cheeks were pink and he tried not to pull a face.
“I want the rest of the carton.” Shane held his hand out for it.
That made Ilya wince, but he nodded after a brief moment’s hesitation and retrieved them to hold out. It was the least he could do after all Shane had done for him.
Shane flipped the top open and did a quick count frowning and shaking his head.
Ilya raised his eyebrows, feeling the colour high on his cheeks.
“There are several missing…” Shane raised pointed out.
“I have had them a while,” Ilya told him with a shrug.
“A while huh. A while as in since before you told me you got rid of them all?” Shane asked calmly.
“I forgot I had these ones, I found them and I was upset with you…”
“Ilya,” Shane sighed. “Is this the last of them?”
Ilya thought about it. “There is one packet in my Lamborghini I think, in the trunk.”
“We’ll get rid of it when you inspect your cars when they arrive.”
“Yes,” Ilya agreed easily, nodding as he reached over to squeeze Shane’s hand over the console.
“Good boy.” Shane smiled pulling back onto the road.
“I love you, Hollander.”
“I love you too, so much.” Shane put his hand back on Ilya’s knee and gave a squeeze driving them off towards the cottage.
