Summary
To help combat the threat of the Kaiju menace someone came up with the hot idea of repurposing Kaiju parts into powerful suits and weapons that would keep response teams alive. Some of the older models include AIs, or augmented intelligences, as a side effect of the process before Mantid scientists learned how to strip them back. These older models tend to be more temperamental, choosy, and extremely powerful in ways that haven’t quite been replicated since, which has made them feared and revered among the Kaiju Defense Force.
Carl is, of course, learning this firsthand when Borant insists he try on a suit with a particularly finnicky AI.

In public, Vox and Alastor are bitter enemies, with one perhaps slightly more invested in their fights and disagreements.
In private? Well, what happens behind closed doors is nobody's business but theirs. Everyone needs a little something to take the edge off, and for Alastor, that something comes in the form of pushing Vox to his limits - until his old pal is ready to push Alastor to his.
But after everything that happened with Vox's failed coup, he's a little less patient than he used to be, and Alastor's acting out isn't quite as cute. It's time for him to learn what a proper punishment looks like, to call him on his bluff and twist the game he's playing until he's left squirming and desperate, and Vox is not gonna shy away from that task. In fact he thinks he's probably going to enjoy it.
