The first time Akaza meets Rengoku Kyojuro, he flees (not from Kyojuro, but from the sun) with a sword in his neck, missing his arms from elbow to hand, feeling anger and annoyance and admiration all at once.
He survives. Against all odds, Rengoku Kyojuro, battered and bruised and human, eye punched out, ribs shattered and a gaping hole in his chest, survives.
(Or: Something about being around Kyojuro keeps on bringing back unwelcome memories, from a time long-locked in the deepest depths of Akaza’s mind.)
