Adam stopped in the doorway. Gansey, who had been a step behind him, stopped because he did.
It took Adam a full second to process what he was seeing. The facts, simply stated, were this:
1. Ronan was wearing make-up. Dark, smoky make-up that made him kinda look like one of the eighties rockstars Maura liked so much, but miles harsher.

Summary
The drive to Cabeswater was humid but quick, and so was the trek in. The forest seemed to pity them and led them to a picturesque little lake, all sparkling blue water and spring grass leading into banks of sand the exact right size for Adam to lie down and have just his toes dipped into the water.
Gansey lugged the cooler out onto the side, and Blue brought out some beach towels she'd snagged from an unused cupboard at 300 Fox Way. Adam tossed a bottle of sun lotion at Ronan, who caught it automatically, but frowned at Adam. If it were anyone else, it would've looked like Ronan was contemplating murdering him for handing him sunscreen, but Adam had, unfortunately, known Ronan for a long time, so he knew to interpret the look as, what the fuck are you giving this to me for?
"You keep acting like you're gonna burst into flames if you so much as look at the sun. Get yourself covered so you can keep your tall, pale and brooding look going on for the summer."

Persephone had gifted Adam rings, and it was driving Ronan to the brink of madness. He felt like he beginning his slow, steady descent into insanity every time Adam twisted them around his clever fingers, not even knowing that Ronan was losing his fucking mind at the glanced sight of protruding knuckles and suntanned skin and flashes of silver.
It’s not like he could take it out on Persephone. She was trying to help. The crystals were supposed to help him with his clarity of mind and calmness or whatever the fuck. Those were good things. Those were necessary things, in Adam’s case, as high-strung as he always was. That wasn’t the problem.
The problem was that Adam kept fucking fiddling with them.

He didn’t snap in the typical Ronan way, but his self control shattered like the empty booze bottles he’d smash at his feet whenever he got drunk and destructive, inwardly and outwardly.
Instead, he stormed into Monmouth in a truly foul mood and declared, “I’m dreaming you all fake IDs.”
And he did. He didn’t give any of them chance to argue (not that any of them were going to – Blue had never been in a club and was morbidly curious; Gansey knew Ronan enough to know that if it wasn’t this, it would be something worse; and the upcoming prospect of exams had been slowly loosening the pressurised cork of Adam’s stress, and this was just the distraction that he needed to stop himself exploding) and flung himself over the couch, uncaring that he accidentally elbowed Gansey in the ribs and put his foot through Noah’s incorporeal chest.

“You’re soaked, Lynch!” he exclaimed, wiping his fingertips off on his jeans, “Jesus. Why are you still sat here? Go get changed.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re going to get sick.”
“Christ, it’s not that big of a deal.”
Adam raised disbelieving eyebrows at him, “If you can sit here and not shiver, then I’ll believe that.”
Ronan held some very hostile eye contact with him - luckily, Adam had spent enough time around him by now that its effect had largely worn off - as his entire body tensed, clearly trying not to shiver. It didn’t work, because a second or so later, another shiver wracked his body.
“There. Point proven.”
“Fine. I’m cold. Happy now?”
“Take your clothes off, Lynch.”
Ronan’s eyebrows shot toward his hairline, “We’re gonna need to get married before you can start making those kinds of requests, Parrish. I’m a man of God.”

Summary
It was very possible that this counted as a form of masochism, letting himself be alone with Adam.
He followed Adam further into the field, trailing just a few steps behind him and admiring the gentle awe radiating from him. It seemed like everything in the field, like Cabeswater itself, was leaning into Adam’s warmth, sunflowers rotating to follow the path of the light. Ronan couldn’t deny doing the same thing himself.
“I didn’t even know this place was here.” Adam said, as though any of them could solidly pinpoint the geography of Cabeswater without asking the forest itself for directions. Though, of course, Adam had his own special connection with the place. Maybe he could find his way around better than the rest of them, “How did you find it?”
Ronan made a non-commital noise in the back of his throat and shrugged, not saying anything so he didn’t have to lie.
[AKA, they stop being idiots and finally make some confessions]
