The skew in Dazai’s voice from admiration to abhorration as he switched from speaking of Oda to himself reminded Chuuya of how vastly complex the young man next to him had always been. Dazai’s intonation told Chuuya more than any truth Dazai ever could have revealed. Dazai’s voice was typically flat with an intentionally predictable cadence. His entire personality was like that, intentionally flat and predictably unpredictable. But now his voice shook, thinning as protective defenses failed on all fronts.
“He seemed like a good guy,” Chuuya replied lamely, “but… so are you.”
Their eyes locked. Dazai glared.
“Sort of,” Chuuya corrected himself, “In your own way.”

“Sleep! I stopped a few weeks ago. Along with some other things,” the new grin that arrived on Dazai’s mouth was doll-like, fake and hollow.

Summary
“Before!” Yosano yelled, suddenly livid with anger and something else she couldn’t quite name. Paying no mind to the dirty glances with which they were assaulted, she continued, “I don’t think any child is born just wanting to die.” Dazai moved to interrupt, but was abruptly stopped before any words left his mouth. “What, who hurt you so bad that all you can think to care about is throwing yourself off a building? Why do you do everything in your power to destroy good things before they can even manifest?”
His face remained blank, a look that could be misconstrued for stoic, but was in earnest, just another wall.
“No one hurt me,” he started, “no one.”
Denial.
She recognized that voice.
It was like déjà vu as once again, the man who was only degrees away from a stranger sounded so uncomfortably familiar. So uncomfortably like herself, who she once was.

A dark glint overtook Dazai’s suddenly hollowed eyes.
Chūya wasn’t expecting to see this side of his ex-partner.
“Everything is a calculated, conscious decision.”

Blood boiled as Chūya felt fury sneak up into is chest. It’s not that he wanted to defend Mori per se, but he wanted to understand how such a good leader could hurt people—children—like Yosano and Dazai without remorse. Without some mental instability. Without being sick.
Because being sick wasn’t an excuse, but a reason. A context.
And he could live with that.

Sitting on the damp, muddy ground, hugging his knees to his chest, not caring about the dirt most definitely getting on his khaki pants and tan coat. When he first got the outfit, it felt like it swallowed him whole. Now, he has grown into it. It is still a bit large on him, his body gangly with the clothes a little loose, but not nearly as oversized as before. More evidence that his body is changing, that he is changing. The more he thinks about it, the worse he feels.
“I’m sorry.”
He rarely apologizes like this, genuine. Maybe it is only something he can only say to a tombstone.
No one ever told him the light would be this lonely.
