“If I don’t fight we will actually starve.” Shen Jiu pointed out to him and scratched at his head. “What would become of Qi-ge without me keeping his belly full?” He gave him a wide smile that showed off the last remaining gap in his teeth that was slowly being filled in by a new tooth.
“Xiao Jiu doesn’t have to worry about Qi-ge.” The older boy pressed his lips together. “I just don’t want you to keep putting yourself in these situations. Xiao Jiu keeps getting hurt now.” As he looked down at Shen Jiu he couldn’t help but feel a little sad as he no longer saw the small child he brought into his life.

The day the Conference started brought an entirely different energy to the land they were in. Shen Jiu could smell it in the air and feel it deep in his bones that the barriers around them were sealed. Even though Wu Yanzi had explained that the barriers wouldn’t physically hold them back, he still felt trapped.
He wanted to walk to the edge of the ‘arena’ they were in and check if he could pass through it.
But he was fearful. If he found out they were actually trapped he would actually begin to freak out and he wouldn’t be able to accomplish what they were there to do.

“And from your failure to me all you did was benefit! Look at you-” Shen Jiu was looking hysterical as his eyes widened and he began to wave his hands all around himself. “The future Sect Leader of Cang Qiong Mountain!” Shen Jiu wiped at his eyes. “And look at what happened to me… a fucking tool for anyone to suck out my energy and livelihood. I have nothing else to offer.”

“Master Shen… what is a Cang Qiong Mountain Sect disciple doing in this establishment at this time?” She asked.
Shen Jiu avoided her stare and simply looked around. “This one is not a real disciple. More like you than them.” He found himself saying things he really shouldn’t have. Shen Jiu bit his tongue as he waited for the girl’s reaction.
“That’s odd.” She responded and pulled a chair out. “Master Shen.” She motioned for him to sit and he did. She hopped on a seat near him and placed her hands on the table in front of them. “So Master Shen is not here for pleasure?” She asked with a tilt of her head.

Ch 6 Excerpt:
“What could have caused this?” Shen Jiu asked in worry and his eyes barely strayed away from Yue Qi’s face to look at the Qian Cao Peak Lord.“There could be multiple reasons.” The Peak Lord said. “And disciple Shen didn’t see disciple Yue consume anything funny? Eat something the rest of you didn’t?” He questioned.
Shen Jiu shook his head. “He wasn’t even drinking the wine.” He said and walked to stand right next to Yue Qi’s sickbed. The young man at least looked peaceful in his forced sleep. “And this isn’t a Qi Deviation? Maybe it hit again after last time?” He inched his hand to take a hold of Yue Qi’s, but under the Peak Lord’s attention he was being careful.
