Eddie’s smile grew and Buck’s inside melted under the heat of the approval.
Eddie’s eyes flickered to Matthew as if expecting him to say something but Matthew was shifting with impatience. Eddie’s eyes cut back to Buck with a quiet nod.
“Well done,” he said and it felt like a gift. A gift Buck wanted to cup in his hands and hold onto forever. Buck smiled. “I’m Eddie. I’ll be one of the monitors tonight. Please feel free to reach out to me if you need anything.”

“I didn’t know you were coming,” Eddie said.
He leaned back in his stool and spread his legs, relaxing into a sprawl because if Buck wanted to have another argument about who was where first then he wasn’t leaving. Buck’s eyes darted down his legs before they looked back up at him again and a rumbling heat in Eddie’s chest seeped into his veins.
Buck licked his lips, shifting his weight from one foot to the next. “We-uh… We had a date.”

How’s your shift going?
Traitorously and because Buck was a glutton for punishment, his eyes slid up from his phone and scanned the bay until he spotted Eddie jumping out of the ambulance with the fluid ease of someone getting comfortable in his surroundings.
But what was he supposed to say? Gee, Maddie, not great, to be honest. My dom partner ended up showing up at the one good thing I had going for me and I’m just waiting for my friends to realize I can’t compete with Mr. Perfect. He’s also pissed at me for some reason and it kind of feels like we broke up a few hours ago and I don’t know why. But it’s fine because eventually my boss will fire me again and none of my friends will want to hang out with me anymore.
That felt like a lot.

“No,” Eddie said, his voice hard as he pinned Buck with a look that sent a shiver racing down his spine. “I’m not taking my problems with Shannon out on you, Buck. I won’t hurt you.”
And for one stunning moment, Buck forgot how to breathe. His heart did a complicated somersault in his chest as he let that settle over him.
Anyone else and Buck would’ve been stinging with the rejection. But it was different with Eddie.
Which is why he pushed just a little more.
“I know that,” Buck said, holding Eddie’s gaze for another moment before he dropped his eyes to Eddie’s lap and leaned against him. “But you can torment me if you want.”

“Wait a minute!” Chimney cried out, waving his hand in front of him. “You know this place too?”
“Uh…” Buck cocked his head. His blue eyes flicked to Eddie before falling back to the others. “Yeah. I meet Eddie for drinks sometimes after his shift.”
As if Eddie had ever let him have a drink that didn’t come out of his own glass when he was feeling generous. But Eddie wasn’t about to tell their team that most of those meet ups involved Buck on his knees for him either.

“Buck,” he said, too quiet to be anything but a whisper and Eddie’s chest went tight with want that he almost couldn’t breathe again.
Two, glassy blue eyes blinked at him. Two, swollen pink lips puckered on a failed attempt at his name. Two hands twitched in the shadows and Eddie was dragged back down into the stunning crash of reality as he took Buck in. The red rimmed around his eyes was still there but there was something else too. Something beyond the dark shadows cutting deep circles under his eyes. Something lost and alone and a little broken swimming beneath tears that were welling up in them but not quite falling past the lash line.
“Make me stop, Eddie,” Buck said, his voice cracking on his name like it was a desperate prayer. “P-Please make me stop.”
Eddie didn’t know what he meant. He didn’t even know if he was hallucinating or not. But then Buck held up his hands and Eddie saw in the light how violently they were shaking.
