When he talks to Henry, Alex hangs onto every word because he knows their inherent value, that they're more precious than the purest gold. When given the opportunity, he makes sure to appreciate the soft curve of Henry's lips, the sharp line of his jaw, all while listening intently to whatever Henry has decided to share with him.
Alex gets it. He knows how sacred those moments are.
But the difference is, Alex is in love with Henry.
He has been for a while now.
And that is why he's drunk.

Summary
Inside, it’s framed by deep maroon curtains, held apart and letting light into the space, giving the world a cropped peek at the story within. There is a single lamp in one corner, tall and simple and illuminating the room in a warm, rose-golden glow that Alex can feel despite the chill in the air around him.
And curled into a plush chair by the window, with a book in his hands and his bottom lip caught between his teeth, is a man.
The man is all long limbs folded together, broad shoulders that would probably swallow Alex completely, a thick coral sweater that stretches across his chest, a halo of blonde hair twisting around his ears and sweeping across his forehead.
Alex stands up and watches him turn a page with a furrow in his brow, his focus on reading sharp and intense. It makes Alex forget about the sting in his knees as he wonders what could be twisting his features like that.
Maybe the man is almost to the climax of the story, the big, unexpected turn of events approaching with rapid speed. Maybe he's concerned about the plot, wondering if he should push through something he isn't enjoying.
All Alex knows for sure is that he is fucking beautiful.

Summary
The next morning, Alex told his parents goodbye and Henry drove him to the airport, both of them sleep-deprived and solemn. Henry hugged him in the shadow of the Delta help desk and kissed Alex’s lips like Alex was his fucking oxygen, the only thing keeping him breathing. Alex was still hoping, reeling as he stared down the path in front of him that didn’t include Henry.
It didn’t feel right, pressing his mouth to Henry’s and wondering if it might be the last time.
Even on the other side of security, with his bag slung over his shoulder, Alex looked back.
Henry was walking away, toward the giant glass doors, his head hung and his hands in his pockets. Alex watched him go, letting the tears fall from his eyes as Henry disappeared. His heart ripped from his chest as he took the most painful breath he’s ever taken in his life, because Henry was Alex’s oxygen, the only thing keeping him breathing.
But Henry let him go.
Henry didn’t ask him to stay.
So Alex left.

“I think… knowing you has made me brave,” Henry whispers, his throat tight around the sincerity of the statement.
Alex’s expression turns fond at Henry's confession. Still, there’s something unreadable in the twist of his mouth, in the darkness of his eyes, that makes Henry feel laid bare and exposed.
“Sweetheart,” Alex says with the slightest shake of his head. “You were already brave.”
Henry’s cheeks heat, his eyes flicking down to the table. He isn’t sure what to say to that, how to verbalize the weight of Alex’s words as they settle in Henry’s bones and make a home there.
“Anyway.” Alex taps his palm against the table. “I’m in. You’ve got me for whatever you need.”

June nods in agreement. “I think that sounds reasonable.”
Nora clicks her tongue. “If we go by 31 days, that’s 32.26 kisses per day. I think it’s doable, but still a challenge. Perfect for the game.”
“I’ve never experienced a dare that goes outside of the typical gaming period,” Henry says, his shoulder bumping into Alex’s as he curls a knee up to his chest. “How would we even keep track of such a thing?”
Nora directs a devilish, sideways grin at Alex, and the realization hits him like a goddamn freight train.
Henry didn’t say no.

The date and time have been burned into Alex’s memory for as long as they’ve been tattooed on the inside of his wrist.
On the morning following his eighteenth birthday, the artificial intelligence spit out that configuration within seconds of reading his genetic code. It was so quick that even the tester was shocked, blinking at the numbers that etched themselves onto Alex’s skin.
“Your soul match is probably really strong,” she explained, smiling warmly at him.
Once outside the looming gray building, Alex stared at the freshly inked dark lines. The abnormally warm spring sun shining on the top of his head made him squint, but the date and time were easy to see. On that day, the predestined moment was still five and a half years away. It seemed like ages for Alex; patience had never been one of his virtues.
Alex pressed his fingertips to the mark and felt his tenacious pulse hammering away beneath it. It was as if his heart was overcome with euphoria, thrilled to know that Alex’s soulmate was out there, somewhere.

Henry can see the recognition in Alex’s eyes and knows there won’t be any lying or pretending here—Alex already knows the truth.
“Does my reputation precede me?” Henry asks, his voice coming out softer than he intended.
“Sort of,” Alex whispers. “But I’m also very perceptive.”
“Hm.”
“Did you have to break his heart?” Alex asks, and there is something kind in his eyes now—almost understanding—which Henry finds preposterous.
There’s no possibility that Alex understands who Henry is, why he has to do the things that he does.
“It’s what I do, I suppose,” Henry tells him, wary of the cracks in the ice ahead of him as he takes another step. “Or haven’t you heard?”
Alex hums, not put off by Henry’s dismissal. “Have you ever considered that it might be a gift to have a heart that’s been broken by you?”

Concussion.
Contusions.
Broken ribs.
Henry knows the words. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he also knows what they mean—that Alex is okay. Injured, yes, but ultimately fine.
But all Henry really hears is hurt.

It seems silly, but Henry is intrigued. Alex likes being praised, thriving on positive attention and affirmation. But perhaps something tangible, even something as simple as shimmering stickers, could be absurd enough to work.

Alex has never claimed to be perfect.
He knows he's made a lot of mistakes in his twenty-three years, enough for an entire fucking lifetime. There have been forgotten birthdays, venom-laced words that he spat because someone hurt his feelings, a few copied homework assignments when he was exhausted and desperate.
He quit his club volleyball team after two weeks because he couldn't figure out how to execute a jump serve and half of the team unfollowed him on Instagram afterward. He shut people out when he was applying to law school and ignored his mom's phone calls during Thanksgiving Break a few years ago and has an uncanny lack of object permanence when it comes to human beings.
There are a lot of things he regrets.
But the worst thing Alex ever did was what he did to Henry.
