Shane stared at the ceiling, arms crossed over his bare chest. He tried counting the little holes in the tiles. They looked like little stars, not unlike what he might see on a dark, clear night at his parents’ cottage.
But he was far from the cottage and far from where he grew up and far from the apartment he now called home in Montreal.
Instead, he was in this tiny, shitty room in Sochi on a tiny, shitty bed in very tight quarters for three grown-ass men, let alone hockey players, trying to convince his brain to shut the fuck up and let him sleep. J.J. and Huff were out doing god knows what. On the prowl for food or booze or girls or all three. They had a game the next day and so many ideas were swirling through his mind. No matter what he thought about, or how hard he tried to tune them all out, the only thing his mind kept coming back to was Ilya fucking Rozanov.

AU. Couldn't leave in that courtoom confession of Luke's. Literally, Cassie could have said then what she said 24 hours later and it'd have been fine? Mash-up of book and movie canon, inspired by the amazing "Fire In My Bones" by Amethyzt, who had the genius idea of the court martial never happening and Luke and Cassie having to figure it out themselves. This story is not in that universe, but in the same spirit. (Go read it, I consider all of the interactions she wrote between Luke and Cassie's mom canon). I also needed more of Luke's journey from a problematic guy to someone worthy of Cassie's love.
