Summary
For his first real glance at the city he’d have to call home from here on out, Columbia wasn’t all that impressive. Admittedly, in the dark, all Aaron could really see was the orangey glare of streetlamps illuminating the highway, reflecting off of other cars that sped past his window. The route took them over a long bridge, tall suspension poles stretching up into nothingness, and if Aaron pushed himself up on his hands far enough, he could just about see the reflection of glowing headlights on the dark river.
The second installment in Aaron's life story: moving to Columbia, meeting his brother, and trying to fit into the puzzle of the world.

Summary
Until he’d gone to his aunt’s wake, and seen Aaron standing alone beside the table that held a framed photograph of his mother. Ironically, the picture in question was taken before Aaron was even born. Tilda’s high school senior picture, from about a month before she dropped out of school. Aaron had been born in November of the following year. Andrew too, Nicky supposed.
Andrew hadn’t been at the funeral. He’d been hospitalised since the crash four days ago, and wasn’t cleared to leave yet. Nicky had seen his parents somewhere in the other room, talking to a few people from the church, and the only other family Aaron had was underneath six feet of fresh dirt.

Summary
Aaron Minyard isn’t drugging himself to stay awake (or asleep) anymore, so he’s taking the more natural route of self-starvation and energy drinks to force his insomnia instead. Any sane person would see this as a decline, but from Aaron’s well-adjusted perspective, it’s a fairly even exchange. Any sane person would say this kind of destructive behavior is a slippery slope back into where he came from. Cut off one head, two more grow back. You can’t kill this monster unless you know its weaknesses. Aaron is no hero, but he is a killer, and he does know his own weaknesses. But he doesn’t have time to exploit them. He has an anatomy test tomorrow.

Summary
Aaron, the rain, and the cigarettes in his pocket.
Without moving, Aaron knows there's a lighter still at the bottom of the side pocket on his pocket. Half-full, last he looked at it.
Smoking will kill him one day, but it's already impressive he's made it this far. Aaron digs in his bag for the lighter, testing it behind his hand where the flame flickers a couple times before catching light. Aaron hadn't noticed how dark the sky had gotten until he'd into the soft glow, and something in his chest begins to untighten.
