Summary
Ponyboy is (barely) coping with the loss of his two best friends and has very little will to survive. When he's attacked in the middle of the night Curly saves him.
"Pony chuckled weakly. "Of course it's you". He let his hand drop. "Go away Curly, I'm trying to get somwehere..." his speech slurred like a drunk and he went limp, his head lolling to the side."I'm not leavin' ya Baby Curtis, just hold on".
OR: Pony is without a friend in the world but Curly is there for him.

Summary
Sodapop Curtis is in love with his best friend. He tried not to, but he's never been known for hiding his feelings.
"Every so often his eyes would flit over to Steve hunched over a car part or another. It wasn’t uncommon for them to be shirtless on the job, especially now that it was summer. Soda committed every muscle, every inch of Steve’s skin to memory. His gut twisted. Staring felt like a crime and Soda remained guilty".
OR: Soda is so obsessed with Steve, he doesn't realize the feeling's mutual.
