I sat at my desk, staring at the blank page. For a second, I almost wrote two words: The End. That would’ve been it.
My hand shook. I couldn’t bring myself to finish it.
That’s when the idea formed, sharp and clear: I’d give myself twelve days.
I wrote the words at the top of the page: 12 Days.
Beneath it, I drew twelve bullet points, each one waiting for a plan. On each day, I’d do something worth remembering. Something I could hold in my hands before I let go. I’d write down what I did as time went on.
Maybe it was selfish. Maybe it wasn’t. I couldn’t decide. But I liked the idea of leaving something behind. I’d leave memories that weren’t sudden and sharp, but slow and soft, something they could hold onto without wondering if they’d missed their chance.
After all, maybe after 12 days I’d change my mind.

It takes another moment for him to attempt to push up against the wood, hearing it groan underneath the weight of something far heavier than him. It takes even longer for him to spot the beetles that crawl over the wood and inch closer to his face, the buzzing of grave flies in his too-small coffin. They buzz steadily by his face, small wings fluttering around as he whimpers, thrashing around as best as he can. (Where’s Darry? He wants to go home.)
By the time he’s acknowledged that he’s in a coffin, the wood has been splintered underneath his fists and dirt fills his mouth as he frantically claws his way out. He’s swallowing back mouthfuls of dirt and tears, whimpering and whining like one of the puppies that are left on the street, he wants to go home. He misses Darry and Soda, he misses the way Darry used to cradle him close and the way Soda's voice would soothe him to sleep. He misses and misses and misses.

Dazai is sent on a mission by Mori. Learn about the gangs from America. Okay, easier said than done.
Soon enough, he gets sent to our beautiful, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Where he meets the Greasers and Socs. He just hangs. Not a Soc or Greaser. Just... There. Soon, some shit goes down, and Dazai being Dazai, gets involved as usual. And then..
They meet the real Dazai-- no. The Demon Prodigy.
