Summary
Josh felt terribly out of place when he walked in. Older, although not by much, and too hardened after spending too long fighting a war he’s not sure he ever believed in—one that he knows won’t be looked kindly upon in the history books.
He feels like he’s lived a hundred different lives in the past seven years—a kid, a killer, and now a wannabe savior, working his way through a surgical internship to attempt to right the wrongs he carries around with him.
Normally he’d be in his apartment, combing through medical journals and patient records, trying to get a step ahead of his fellow interns. He only decided to come out to get his therapist off his back. She’s on him about finding hobbies and friends, something besides work. He has a feeling she’s only a few sessions away from bringing up PTSD and referring him to support groups.

In front of him, Josh is studying the goings-on in the firepit the same way he’d study an x-ray, brows pinched and jaw set. He leans forward, hands braced on his thighs, and blows at the base of the stacked wood. The embers glow hot, and smoke billows as Josh takes another breath and tries again.
Oliver had thought that going camping would trigger something inside of him. He’d have flashbacks to the endless night he spent clutching his father’s rifle, terrified of every snapping branch, unaware that his father was home, crafting a lie with his mother that would span decades.
This felt different from the start.

Fingers tangled loosely together, Josh follows Wolf through the gallery in a series of starts and stops.
He learned fairly quickly that his boyfriend is a stop and read the placard kind of a person. He lingers in front of each frame, absorbing every word then steps back to admire the work before moving on.
Josh thought it would test his patience since he can run through a museum with passing glances, always eager to move onto the next thing. Instead, he’s surprised to find how much he likes meandering, watching the way Wolf’s brows furrow or the way he tips his head to the side as he fully takes in what’s in front of him.

“You should stay,” Oliver blurts out and Josh huffs a laugh against the rim of the mug.
“Yeah, I was planning on it.”
“No, I mean for good. Forever. You should move in.”

Josh hums in agreement and Wolf leans in and kisses him, off-center and sloppy, until a chorus of catcalls erupt from behind him.
Wolf pulls away with a grin, cheeks pink and lips red, and waves at Carol and her gaggle of divorcées.
“We all agreed that you’re the hottest man here,” Wolf tells him, “except for Anna,” he adds with a scoff and a dismissive hand in the group's direction. “But obviously she has terrible taste in men, she's divorced.”
“Maybe we keep that observation between us,” Josh tells him and Wolf nods sagely and holds his fingers to his own lips.
