Summary
It’s stupid that he doesn’t even feel stupid like this – on his knees, in nothing but his underwear, tear-streaked face pressed into the hand of the coolest guy he’s ever seen. A month ago, he couldn’t have taken this. Two months ago, he couldn’t have even set foot in that bar. Now he’s kneeling on Sand’s carpet and clutching his hand like he’s about to be swallowed whole by a real pit instead of just the one inside him, and he doesn’t even care what he looks like.
Seventy-two days into sobriety, Ray is still learning how to make better choices.

Summary
And he isn’t paying attention to the way Sand’s looking at him; he’s angry, and he’s hurt, and he’s sick of his own shit yet again. The fact that Sand isn’t makes this, somehow, all the more infuriating. The fact that he’s just standing there thinking while Ray smokes his way through half a Krong Thip in four solid drags and resists the urge to put his fist through a wall isn’t fair.
“Do you mind if we try one thing before you give up, here?” Sand asks.
Forty-four days into sobriety, Ray is still learning how to get out of his own way.

Summary
Ray is used to being able to do what he wants once he decides he wants to do it; he is rich, and very few people have ever cared enough to try and stop him. He expected the doctors at his fancy rehab clinic to be pleased that he was prepared to give up drinking, and he’s shocked when he does not receive the praise he’s been anticipating.
“What do you mean I can’t just quit?”
Zero days into sobriety, Ray learns that recovery will be anything but straightforward. When his expectations collide with reality on a rainy morning that should have been clear, he's forced to confront a choice he thought he wouldn't have to make for years.
Luckily, he has Sand to help him make it.
