Summary
The eyes are everywhere.
They hover in the shadows as Jax passes, spawn from random points on the walls, blink up at him from the bowl of soup Ragatha hands him at dinner. He catches one staring from his peripheral vision, sees it pulse green and pink and yellow–colors so vivid his head aches long after he averts his gaze.
No one else reacts to their sudden appearance, which is weird, sure–but so was everything else in the circus. Maybe this was just one of those things it was easier not to think about, like the fact that he looked more animal than human these days, or that at any moment one of the cast could mutate into a hideous monster and beat Jax within an inch of his digital life. Again.
Whatever. Jax can work with that. He’s great at not thinking about things.
What if Jax’s whole 'addressing the audience' bit had a little more truth to it than he lets on? Pre-canon.

Summary
"You’re not a good person, Ragatha. She’s down there because of us, and we’re up here, and–” Jax glances down at his trembling hands, curling them into fists at his sides. His voice comes quiet as he speaks again, scraping the bottom of his register.
“As long as we’re both still here, I will never let you forget that."
Ribbit is gone. Something strange is going on with Jax. Ragatha tries her best to keep him from following in her old friend's footsteps.

Summary
“Is there a reason you’re so evasive?”
Jax doesn't answer right away. His eyes shift somewhere over her shoulder, attention lingering in the empty air at Pomni's back. She watches the tension creep into the edges of his expression, a hairline crack forming in his usual bravado.
Then his gaze snaps to hers again, and Jax's grin returns full force, eyes squinting with the stretch of it.
“There you go again,” Jax says, clicking his tongue with the disapproval of a teacher delivering a bad grade. “Asking questions you don’t want the answers to.”
Things come easily to Jax. He breezes his way through adventures, dodges every disaster, and always seems to be in the right place at the right time to instigate maximum chaos. While the rest of the cast struggles to keep themselves together in the face of constant upheaval, Jax navigates the digital world like he was born for it.
But there's something not quite right with the Circus's resident troublemaker. Something Jax is desperate to keep hidden.
Unfortunately for him, Pomni has been paying attention.
