Summary
He should sleep.
The good Lord knows it—Eywa knows it. He needs it.
But every time he closes his eyes, something tears open in his mind.
Tom—dead on concrete, still in that cardboard box, burning in the incinerator seconds later.Venezuela—Davis, Reed, the goddamn comms boy with half his face off.
Tsu’Tey—bleeding out on the grass, that soft breath that stopped, the way the light dimmed in his eyes.
He nearly didn’t come back.
And Jake... Jake nearly didn’t get to be here. To have this. This family.
This peace.
And peace is the scariest part.
Because he’s never trusted it to last.TL;DR—Tsu’Tey had fallen asleep easily, one arm still draped protectively around Neteyam, hand resting on the tiny rise of his son’s chest.
Jake, on the other hand, is wide awake. Again.Series

But then his gaze shifts to Neteyam—or to his own belly, heavy with his second—then to Kirina, and he remembers.

Summary
She did not move.
She remained there, elbows pressed to her knees, her hands folded tightly beneath her chin. The air was thick and warm, but her bones felt cold. Old. Her eyes trailed up to the trees that swayed overhead—gentle and eternal—and she hated them a little for being so unbothered.
Another child.
He did not make an announcement as he did with his first; he let the growth of his stomach speak for him, then the little five-fingered girl.
Born of the sawtute doctor, Graceaugustine, but was being raised by Neytiri and her mate and Tsu’Tey and Jake—her conception, a miracle. Mo’at had told her.
Her son had borne another child, and she had not known the first child or this one; she had not been there to rub the sweat from his brow or to place a hand on his belly and whisper to the little life growing inside him. She had not brought offerings, or sung or—perhaps in another life.
She should have. She could have.
She did not.
She licked her lips: “Oh—that is…oh…”

Summary
Sleep was Jake’s favorite thing—an excuse to be draped over or tucked under his husband, an excuse to listen to Tsu’Tey’s endless heartbeat and know that this pulse, this warmth, and this love was entirely his. In the quiet dark, wrapped securely in each other's arms with their little ones curled, everything felt real. Grounded. Safe.
It was stupid to think peace was ever free.
Freedom became less of an option the moment sleep finally forced his eyes heavy. The second the conscious world slipped away, the curtain fell wide open to drag them both right back into the dark.

“Still can’t believe you’re shackin’ up with that bastard,” Quaritch muttered, voice rougher than before. “You know what he did to my men in ’52. I know you saw the video.” The sole reason Wainfleet drank himself stupid after they found out who Sully’s baby mama actually was.

Summary
"Mommy didn’t keep the curtains open anymore; he used to, but after that day Tuk came home and heard Daddy’s voice ripping through the dark—words all growly and mean: 'Tsu'Tey, what the hell, baby,' and 'that’s not fuckin’ okay, no, no—shit!' thrown at Mommy, followed by something hitting the ground. It was quiet, then she heard the humming of Neteyam's lifesong, followed by Daddy, eyes red and mad, flipping the flaps open and never closing them again.
Well, they only closed when Daddy was there with Mommy."
Or, in the span of a week after losing their son, Jake nearly loses his husband.

Summary
“You know,” Neytiri said quietly, fingers slowing in the weaving. “I dreamed…before you said you were pregnant.”
Tsu’Tey looked up quickly as Jake sat up straighter. “What?”
Neytiri nodded shyly, and she worried about what she was going to say next.
“Remember when I jokingly said Arvok would dream of fish? He did, but I did the very next night.” She paused her beading and closed her eyes. “I was shooting arrows in the lake, and then this child came—blue and bright. He looked at me with your eyes and was so cute…looked just like Artsut when the light hit him.” She paused, tying off a knot, then looked at the newly mated couple. “I asked him his name and he said, 'Neteyam.'"

Summary
There were whole days at the reef where he’d gone without seeing those eyes look at him with anything but trepidation. Now, on his mother-in-law’s face, they were older, tired, carved out, yet housed the same flint and fire he’d fallen into sixteen years ago. It was unfair, he thought, that the Great Mother had taken Tsu’Tey’s body and left his mother’s face behind for Jake to trip over in the dark.
|
tl;dr—“When you came back yesterday, do you know what your husband did?” Tsu’Tey shook his head—when they landed in Ayaram Alusìng, the first thing Tsu’Tey did was go into the medical bay—Ninat with Tarsem, forcing him and Neytiri because she bled through her wraps. “He hugged me.” Based off Chapter 6 of There Are No Atheists in Foxholes

Summary
‘Tsu’Tey.’ Jake stood there, frozen between wanting to argue and wanting to kneel beside him and hold him so hard he couldn’t drift away. The tools in Jake’s hands felt suddenly obscene. He set them down slowly—placing a weapon on sacred grounds.
‘Tsu'Tey—baby,’ Jake said again, softer this time, voice cracking around the edges. ‘Talk to me.’
Tsu'Tey's ear flicked.
OR, Correction without love is cruel. Tsu’Tey understood that not all uniltìrantokx and sawtute were bad; he learned this fact after war, after dying, and after having children. But after losing his eldest son, that same cruel pain took him again to those unimaginable places that he never thought he would have to return to.

"The way of water has no beginning and no end; the sea is around you and in you; the sea is your home before your birth and after your death. Our hearts beat in the womb of the world, while our breath burns in the shadows of the deep. The sea gives and the sea takes—water connects all things: life to death, darkness to light."
