Enjolras lights a cigarette and sinks down into his car seat. He wants to melt.
“Thank you.”
“I don't have anything better to do.”Enjolras is discharged from an involuntary hold, where he was diagnosed with psychosis. This is what happens in the immediate aftermath of that experience, and how he readjusts to life, adjusts to his new diagnosis, and experiences the fallout of a psychotic break. “You should really quit smoking, you know,”
Grantaire takes another long drag from his cigarette and blows smoke over the edge of the fire escape, pretending to look like the sudden interjection hasn’t startled him. The rest of the Amis have trickled into the emergency post-protest meeting, filling the room with shouts and anger, and Grantaire has stepped out for a minute. He tells himself it’s because he doesn’t care, not because he’s still shaking from adrenaline. The nicotine helps. What doesn’t help his growing anxiety is when Enjolras sits down beside his careful perch, a good couple of inches between them. Please don’t yell at me again.
“You should stop organizing protests.”
Enjolras’s sharp intake of breath is palpable, and Grantaire can practically feel the frustration emanating from the man. He refuses to look at that face, which is undoubtedly flushed red against Enjolras’s golden curls. Instead, he regards the view from the fire escape with an attempt at an artist’s gaze; he studies the way the unusually bright, October sunlight casts on the run-down apartment building across the street’s crumbling, burnt orange bricks. -

If she had just a drop more motivation in her body, Éponine would have been incensed by the finality with which Combeferre spoke; she was just so done with men telling her how the world works when they themselves have absolutely no clue. But he was a good person who meant nothing by it and, in hindsight, she could concede that he’d been nothing but nice to her all night and it wasn’t his fault that everything was pushing her — bit by bit — closer to the edge.
Yeah, it hadn’t been a great week.
Fuck it. It had been a shit year. The fact that it was only April be damned, she thought to herself as she collapsed back into the sofa with a resigned sigh.

His movements are as fluid as that of other older Li clan disciples that Grantaire has seen before, but beneath the surface there seems also to be a power more akin to fire than water. The boy is practically glowing as he finishes the set, and the water lilies in the pond at the edge of the courtyard sway from the gust of wind that propels forward from his punch.”

Enjolras. A disillusioned child of the 60s, disillusioned beyond belief, staunchly correct all the time, and not easily impressed, is accosted by a strange man outside a bar. A man with riches beyond belief and a terrible attitude who is wrong about everything, and he becomes obsessed. First, with proving him wrong, second, with chastising him for the poor storage of all his historic artifacts, and finally, with proving he killed Jean Prouvaire. It proves to be something close to the death of him.
