There’s a moment of quiet struggle as Luis repositions himself in bed - Krauser’s knife had gotten him right in the spine, and how much that hinders his movement seems to vary by the hour, the doctors still hoping for a miracle - but soon enough, he’s holding the book open in one hand, head raised proudly, clearing his throat.
“Desocupado lector,” he begins, exaggeratedly dramatic, gesturing like a stereotypical Shakespeare performer, “sin juramento me podrás creer-”
“Your doctors are going to kill me, giving you more reasons to run your mouth,” Leon interjects, knowing that his window to get a word in edgeways is creeping ever smaller.

"FBI!" he snarled, his voice tight. "Drop your weapon, now!"
The roar of the chainsaw downstairs was deafening. The entire house vibrated as the back door finally gave way with a crash of splintered wood. Heavy, thudding footsteps stomped into the house.
Neither agent flinched. Their guns remained locked on each other, two fingers a hair's breadth from pulling the trigger. The rain hammered against the window, and the threat below began to climb the stairs.
The world narrowed to the space of a single, rotting hallway.
Upstairs, two agents, guns locked. Downstairs, a roaring chainsaw and the thud of heavy, purposeful boots on the steps. The air was a suffocating, chemical soup of scent. Leon’s dominant Alpha presence—ozone, pine, and gunpowder—was an oppressive, physical weight in the small room. It was a scent of pure, controlled aggression. Dominique’s Omega scent, normally crushed under a mountain of suppressants, was flaring in pure, defiant terror. It was a sharp, acidic spike of green tea and citrus, a 'back the fuck off' warning that was, to any Alpha, an invitation to a challenge.

He looks down and sees it there, splattered across the palms of his hands and feels the world tilt on its axis for a moment. Sees the darkened planks of a damaged rowboat, the water littered with that same red stain, dark and daunting to match the blackened veins on his skin. An old corpse floating at the surface, a monster fed on a diet of the burned bodies of non-believers.
He blinks, coming to by a windowsill, staring at the pavement below like a man possessed. He’s rusty, that much is clear, but he still has years of trained instincts to rely on, and catches himself in a practiced roll. His surroundings aren’t entirely unfamiliar, laden with fuzzy memories of clumsy hands pulling at garden weeds, and making mud-pies during Spring showers. It nearly catches him as he stares at that picket fence between himself and the backyard, but he wrenches his mind back with another glance at those red-stained hands, the pacifier lying dirtied and abandoned on the drive.
He’s an agent, a man with a body count, and he can’t forget that anymore.

The straggling infected that didn't die when the government tried to blow the place to smithereens simply grew stronger, adapting to the radiation and terrain. They're stronger, faster, and smarter than before.
