“You mustn’t cower, Gloom,” he would say. He would stare at me with such conviction that I could feel it, even if I couldn’t see his gaze through the hazy dots in my vision. There was nothing I could do. I could not be a hero if I were dead. I had tried to voice this to him, I had tried to say that I could be helpful if he would let me do things my way. Those complaints fell on deaf ears. There weren’t enough ‘kicks that could fight. He would insist on training my martial arts, throwing me into fights I couldn’t win, he said it would make me stronger. It never did. I tried not to complain too much, given that I did sign up for this job. I wanted to be a hero.
