Waverly tells Gaby the truth six days after Illya’s left.
She’s not entirely sure what she’s thinking, sitting there in the spare chair in his office, a mug of tea burning her hands.
She thinks back to that Thursday morning. The odd sheen in Illya’s eyes as he gathered his keys off the hook by the door. As he said something about questions for Waverly concerning their last mission.
She should have known.

“Annihilation,” says Solo, helpfully, and Illya stares at him in horror, his heart skipping beats until he realizes that nothing is happening. His head spins.“Once this place…” Solo’s voice cracks and he shakes his head. Tries again. “Once it got into us… none of that shit worked. It puts something in you, Illya, I don’t-”
“I know,” says Illya quietly. And Solo makes a sound that should not be possible, taught and raw and ragged like someone is ripping him open from the inside.

He set out on a search, but he thinks he might have lost something vital along the way. He remembers Solo the way one remembers a dream, faint and just tangible enough that the tickle inside your head might drive you mad.
He’d tried to stand against it, when the draft was called. When Sanders recalled Solo and forced him onto the mission. Solo’s final six months… he was so close to free, Illya and Gaby had grown careless. They had thought that they were untouchable. That their team would make it. that they’d manage to crack open a bottle of champagne and toast to Solo once again owning himself.

"The sand beneath my fingers is hot. Abrasive. The rolling vibration of the grain moving over the backs of my hands reminds me of a type of smoothness- a micro shhh shhh that is the only thing I can really focus on. I think it's all over- whatever just happened. [I know what happened.] My fingers test the edges of where the water from the happening has settled into a damp clump in my shadow. It is evaporating nicely in irregular waves of heat.
What if Vash did some reverse photosynthesizing and things just kept getting worse from there? A synesthesia inspired prose poetry and experimental form project with too much plot. I wrote this for me but you can read it too."
