Though, Jason's downfall had a bit of an insidious onset if he's being honest in his evaluation of it. In some ways, now that the illusions built around him in concrete during his childhood have all but shattered, he sees that his fall from grace would have most likely been inevitable.

Jason took a gap year. He had gotten into Purdue the year prior, but that was his plan with Chrissy, and now that she was—he didn’t want to admit it, but he wasn’t ready. His mother said that recognizing he wasn’t ready for something was a sign of maturity, so at least he had that in his favor. He was sure he could spin it in his next round of college essays. He just had to figure out what the hell he was doing around Hawkins.
Really, as soon as he had the question in his mind, he also had the answer: keeping watch. Somehow or other Eddie Munson had gotten off the hook for homicide several times over, even with Jason’s own eyewitness testimony.
Someone needed to be looking out for Hawkins, and it clearly wasn’t going to be the police. Jason picked up his dad’s gun, feeling the comforting solid weight of it in his hand. This is for you, Chrissy, he thought, and went to patrol.

“Alright kid, give it up. I found you.” Hopper sighed, waiting for the kid to pick himself up off of the ground and round the tree with those big guilty brown eyes that Hopper had seen one too many times before arresting him.
But when there was no movement, Hopper found his stomach twisting, unsettled. Slowly approaching closer, it was then that he spotted Munson's hands bound behind the tree trunk. This was enough for his shoulders to tense and he reminded himself of the words “drug deal gone wrong” that the anonymous caller had used. Quickening his pace, Hopper suddenly rounded the tree and took in the mess that Eddie Munson was.

Jason and his teammates set Eddie up and leave him tied and stranded in the forest for nine hours before Hopper is called and left an anonymous tip about a "drug deal gone wrong". Only, instead of arresting Eddie, he offers a helping hand.
