Summary
He had never been to Ketterdam before, only heard of it from travellers. It was supposed to be lawless, the streets rolling with rats, ruffians, and all sorts of evil-doers. There were nice parts, too, of course. Everyone assured him that the university was pristine, closed off from the sin of the staves. Further off in the country was supposedly much better, too.

Jesper was so focused on the conversation he nearly ran into a pair of men walking past them. One of them growled something and shot him a venomous look, and the sharpshooter could have sworn his heart stopped for a moment. Are they gang enforcers? Do they recognise him? He tries to keep a list of his debts, but something could have slipped his mind. He goes through his mental library to remember if someone wanted payment today—
And then the moment was gone. The men continued on, they probably weren’t from the Dime Lions or Black Tips or anyone else. Jesper let out a breath he didn’t realise he was holding

For most of his life, Jesper had thought it was normal to fall in love a little bit with almost every person you ever meet. It was really only until he made it to Ketterdam did he realize that wasn’t true. People weren’t full of love, like he was- they were full of hate.
Even in spite of that, the city was still… beautiful. It was a different type of beauty- a rougher, grittier beauty, but it was sharper too. If you rubbed against it wrong, it cut you.

In the whirlwind of his addiction, Jesper made awful, terrible, no-good choices. He lied, and stole, and hurt the people around him. But now years into his recovery, he's made amends where he can and with the support of his friends, his support group, his sponsor and his therapist, he's doing far better than he ever thought he could.
Five years ago, Wylan was someone he hurt. Someone he knew deserved to be treated better but never was, and someone who had been on Jesper's list to make amends with since the beginning. So why did Wylan have to make it so damn difficult?

Ravka's navy will fall to Kerch's, most of Ravka's territory will go to Fjerda and if it has any money left then I expect plenty of it will be given to Kerch as part of the deal. The Shu will move against Fjerda to take back the territories they were trying to win from Ravka, and Fjerda will pay them little mind until they declare war on Kerch. Novyi Zem will back Shu Han, because they still think their trade ambassador was killed by the Kerch in what was actually Shu Han's last attempt to start a war over here, Fjerda will back Kerch, refugees will flee to the Wandering Isle and their economy won't be able to withstand it, and meanwhile I will remain exactly where I am and get drunk toasting to the end of the world. Jesper smiles, more a grimace than anything else and feels the pull in every muscle, every cut stinging in the cool air. He swipes his tongue over bloodied teeth before speaking, “I did not think Kaz Brekker to be someone who offers to help people so freely.”
Something flashes in Brekker's eyes that Jesper has no way of identifying. The corner of his lips twitch upwards and his hands flex on the head of his cane, Jesper thinks maybe he sees blood splattered on it.

Jesper tuts, “And I’ve always been so good at avoiding a gunfight before,” he replies, rolling his eyes, exhaling heavily.
“I’m not saying the fights will go away, but we’re not going to leave you because you’re in them,” Inej’s thumb darts out to wipe a traitorous tear streaming fast down Jesper’s cheek, “but stop trying to lose yourself in them.”
