By 16, she'd grown into a beloved member of the community. She possessed a beauty that didn’t shout but invited slow, steady appreciation. Every person she met often convinced themselves they were the first to notice it.

    Her second daughter, Kalila, wasn't so adored. She wasn’t unattractive, exactly, but people avoided her almost by instinct. Perhaps it was her golden eyes, too bright and too intense. Or it was the distractingly deep, uneven scar across her cheek. Or maybe it was the fact that she was reckless, blunt, and notably less kind than her sister.

    Elmyra didn't care about differences. She loved the two girls, and they loved her. And the three of them found happiness together.

    But, quietly, Kalila did care. She cared a lot. More than she wanted to.

    And when the SOLDIER Zack crashes into their lives, the quiet divide between the sisters begins to crack open, splintered by envy, fear, and the oppressive, unrelenting reach of Shinra.

    She picks up another crate and watches Tseng turn, his pity focused anywhere but on the girl it’s meant for. He always takes so long to answer her less-nuanced questions, shaping cold facts into niceties with his forked tongue until he thinks they’ll hurt Aerith less. He’s always been a real coward. “Shinra doesn’t know you’re here,” he says. “I haven’t told anyone.”

    “You’re Shinra,” she argues. “And you’re not supposed to let me leave, are you?”

    “It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve broken a rule for you.”

    In pursuit of Zack and freedom from subjugation under Shinra, Aerith attempts to escape from Midgar. Tseng's presence makes that easier said than done.
