      my comment on this fic bc it captures exactly how this made me feel:

      yeah so this checks every single box for a racebend fic ive ever wanted. this is so, so unbelievably amazing especially because of the way mark is still such a fucking asshole. like yeah he has his reasons for things and his own hangups and relationships with people, but changing his race and implementing both subtle/unsubtle racism that he endures doesnt make him some martyr for the greater good. he's just mark and mark is an asshole and the world goes on. i think the part about randi struck the biggest, longest, ringy-est chord in me. her sentiments resonate a lot with how i feel as a second gen Chinese american, and those sentiments are even more magnified with recent history and events. but i cant help but feel exactly what mark does in this: why does it matter? why should i care? can i actually change anything? and the fact is that i dont know. am i speaking on things that i actually have an understanding on, or am i just freeloading on all the suffering around me? seeing mark be unaffected and almost...indifferent to the casual racism he experiences reminds me of myself in highschool. i would laugh shit off and genuinely believe that people were trying to be funny when they would say racist bullshit like that. and maybe they were. but seeing it so plainly, and to be done (weathered through) in order to achieve an end goal--changing the world in mark's case, to be liked in mine--sort of changes my perspective. i love this so much because it makes me think. it calls attention to tropes, to stereotypes, and then plays into them in such a masterful way that makes /sense/. i dont know how to explain it. i felt a weird and stilted connection to mark here, which im not very used to feeling, and it went deeper than just "oh i fuck up sometimes and feel bad", straight to "yeah that's an actual thought i've had connected to an experience i've also had and those are actually just my parents". which is fucking awesome. so thank you.
