He was raised in a convent in Carmarthen and he has an ability to find lost people that cannot be explained by logic. When Arthur realizes his sister, Morgana, has gone missing, Lance introduces him to Merlin, in hopes that everything going wrong can become right once again. Merlin is reluctant at first but sometimes it's the things that scare us that are most important and destiny, of course, is not so easily avoided.

Merlin looked into the space under his bedside drawer—a secret spot—and bit his lip looking at the array of toys. He and Arthur had been back at school for a few weeks now, and though they’d had some fun with the stuff he’d purchased during the break, they still hadn’t used everything, and Merlin was dying to try, well… pretty much all of them.
He was trying to be patient and stretch them out, rather than using everything in quick succession, wanting to make the excitement last as long as possible. But this week had been rough and Merlin wanted something new to cheer them up.
He’d decided to grab something, stash it under his pillow and surprise Arthur with that tonight.
With his plan made, Merlin wondered what to pick. He couldn’t decide. He looked away, and reached into the space, deciding he’d take the first thing that he touched. As he touched something hard and smooth, he wrapped his fingers around it, withdrawing it from its hidden spot. He hurried to put the drawer back, hiding the toy away for later.

Arthur ignored it, he was drunk and he was always dick when he got drunk on vodka.
“Tell me, Merlin. Are you in need of employment?”
Merlin rolled his eyes and turned away from him.
“Aww,” he called mockingly. “Don’t walk away!”
The man turned around incredulously, “From you?”
