Chapter 1 of Oscar Wilde's 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' retold in a modern university setting, on a summer's day, in England. Basil tells Henry about how he met Dorian and why he won't exhibit his portrait, as well as how he feels about Dorian.
They sat on a bench in the shade of a bay hedge, and the sunlight dappled their skin. White daisies trembled in the grass. Henry looked over at Basil, who was looking at the summer sky, and found that strange soft smile on his face again.
'Tell me the real reason you won’t exhibit Dorian Gray’s portrait.’
‘I will tell you,’ said Basil, but then his face became uncertain. '...You wouldn’t get it. You might not even believe it.’
Basil looked down at the flower and began to pluck pale petals from it, one by one. She loves me, she loves me not, he loves me, he loves me not. ‘I’m sure I’ll understand,’ replied Henry, ‘anyway, I can believe anything, as long as it’s totally incredible.’
Basil began after a pause. ‘The story goes like this: Two months ago, I went to a party at Brenda’s. I’d been there about ten minutes when I felt someone watching me, turned around, and met eyes with Dorian Gray...'- Language:

He stepped inside the cold, melachonic room. This had been where all his memories had laid. Where he spent sleepless nights and watched many a winter pass quietly. It was quiet, but pleasant. Lovely, too. He could still vaguely remember- At the far corner was where he had placed the easels that were broken by a young, petulant boy. They were gathering dust now. There used to be a coffee table near the glass sliding doors and the glass walls, too. It was gone.It made him feel dull. This room was once warm. It always was warm. No matter the weather, the season or the day- It had always felt so warm and pleasant and nice. It should, feel that way. It should feel like home.

Presently, he rubs his arms together and shivers. While a calm, blonde haired figure walks past him. The epitome of the devil, and the reason behind all of his struggles..

Alan welcomed any pretext to linger in Gray's company. 'I suppose I might…help instruct you, in that way.'
'Wonderful! I do believe we are to be very good friends, Alan,' said Gray. Then, with a touch of almost boyish hesitation, he added, 'If I may call you that.'
