Sanji smiles. “Your swords deserve better,” he says, just as quietly. His hand moves to take Zoro by the chin and Zoro is frozen at the touch of cool fingers like he’s never been before, halted in his tracks by one simple stupid touch like he’s worth nothing at all – and Sanji holds him there like he’s got the power to do it, leans forward, and presses his lips to the opposite edge of Wadō Ichimonji’s hilt. Zoro can smell the familiar acrid tang of cigarette smoke, can hear the quiet rasp of lips against knotted silk, can feel the gentle wash of Sanji’s breath.

I was barely eight years old. Spent six months that way, with the added bonus of getting beaten to a pulp by my brothers on a regular basis.”
A dark fury washed over Zoro. His hands curled into fists so tight that his blunt fingernails dug into his palms, causing them to bleed. “I will end him.”
Sanji’s eyes shot to Zoro and the anger in his features melted away. “Idiot. He’s not worth it.”
“You are.”

“You being hurt hurts me, dumbass,” Sanji told him bluntly. “I hate it. I’d take your pain and your broken bones if I could.”

“Do you love them?” the Cook asks. “The person I'll marry?”
The Older Cook scoffs. “Who do you take me for?”
The Cook nods and swallows. “Do they love you back?”
At that, the older Cook beams, the same radiant smile from when they were nineteen, and says, “They do.”
The Cook’s gaze meets Zoro’s and the weight of the hope in it nearly brings him to his knees. Twenty-one years of love, begging to be reciprocated. The first time the Cook has asked for what he wants.
Then the hope disappears, killed by resignation. Zoro can almost hear him thinking: if Zoro didn't choose him in twenty-one years, why should anything change now?

This gives Bege pause, surprise flashing on his face before returning to a practised neutrality.

“As in, you can't have him,” Zoro should have let his Captain speak first, but his mouth opens almost on instinct, speaking over the big man as they join their crewmates.
