“Hey,” he says, voice still scratchy from disuse. “Sorry.”
“Don’t apologize,” Ilya replies immediately. “You have done nothing wrong.”
Shane nods and looks at his feet. “I know, I just- I just hate that I’m like this. That I can’t express myself to you or exist like a normal person. That things bother me for no reason at all and I can’t deal with it.”
Ilya frowns slightly, heart hurting for his partner. “It is not your fault. Your brain is just wired differently, is all. And that is okay.”
Shane shakes his head, and his body seems to curl in on itself as he replies. “I know, I know, I just really, really hate it sometimes.” His voice cracks on the last few words, and a single tear escapes his eye and begins a slow journey down his freckled cheek.

Shane has felt this meltdown building all damn day. He's been so good at hiding all this from Ilya, and this is about to be the end of it. The best hockey player in the world isn't supposed to be crying in a corner and trembling like this. Ilya now knows how pathetic he is.
