Maekar Targaryen has been spoken for since the day he was born. The first omega the dragons have seen in nearly a hundred years, promised to his brother Baelor before he could walk, and kept on a high shelf ever since.
Baelor, who is thirty four and has more pressing things to think about than a betrothal settled over a cradle, put their wedding off the moment Daemon Blackfyre raised his banners, and never noticed what it cost.
Maekar has other ideas. He steals away from the Red Keep, rides eleven days to war, and is determined to prove he’s a knight.

Baelor is thirty six, the crown prince, and has buried one wife already. He did not ask for another but a rebellion does not care what you ask for, and so he found himself wed to a brother half his age in the name of Targaryen unity.
Maekar is eighteen, an omega, and has spent three years at Summerhall understanding exactly what he is to his husband; an arrangement. A political necessity. An afterthought, not that this is anything new.
With the rebellion reshaping itself and a unified front to maintain, they are summoned to King's Landing to begin the marriage in earnest.
Neither of them is particularly pleased about it.

Eventually, Melkor – disguised as someone not easily recognized as a Vala – visits the Red Light District and sees the most beautiful Maia he has ever seen.
