Shinobu swoons. She sighs.
“Yeah,” she says weakly. “You look good.” There is no word good enough to describe how Mitsuri looks right now, but certainly good is unfathomably weak; the borders of the word curl in, feel uncertain, too tame in Shinobu’s taut mouth. Mitsuri must know she looks good, right? She must. But she still smiles big and brightly and says, “Thank you! Now it’s your turn to get ready!” and brandishes makeup brushes at Shinobu like Shinobu just said she’s: regal, elegant. Perfect. Which she is. Perfect.
“Oh, I—”
“It’ll be fun!” Mitsuri grabs Shinobu’s arm, who teeters on the edge of her bed like a praying mantis and finally falls gracefully to the floor. “We’ll dance all night! Have a great time! Meet soooo many guys!” She giggles, a light and airy laugh.
For some reason, it’s the last part that feels like a dagger in Shinobu’s throat.
