    Summary

Zoey was adamant that their current situation was not her fault. Well, not entirely. So yeah, maybe she moved her streaming set up to the living room, and okay maybe she forgot to send the text to Mira so she knew what to expect when she got home. But, if you really think about it, it was bound to happen anyway right?

    Summary

Zoey doesn’t know how long she stands there in the middle of her room, gawking at the notification flashing at her screen.

Well, notifications, plural. They’re back to back on her home screen, right under all her social media notifications of people showering her with likes for today’s breakfast.

    Ryu Rumi sent you $250.00
“For lunch! Let me know if you need more xo”

    Kang Mira sent you $501.00
“lmk if she sent more than 500, I can double it lol”

Zoey loudly declares, “What the HELL?”

Or, broke college student Zoey goes viral for her revolting college meals—and rich girls Rumi and Mira find a little pity (among other things) in their hearts for her.

    Summary

Over Rumi's arm, crawling up her shoulder and to her neck, were dull, dark purple patterns. They were unmistakable. They couldn't be anything else.

Around them, the honmoon rippled; the patterns flashed in time with it, a wave of vibrant pink pulsing through them and closing in on the injury, only for the glow to be repelled and spread outwards instead.

The cold dread from before was back, pressing its frigid fingers to her spine. Her limbs were suddenly too heavy to move. Her brain buzzed with thousands of thoughts, too loud for any specific one to stand out.

It didn't make sense. It wasn't possible.

But then, neither was her shin-kal cutting Rumi.

Honmoon weapons only killed demons. It was the reason Zoey could take risks with throwing her shin-kals—even if she did hit someone, the worst it could do was bruise.

    So why was Rumi bleeding?

    Summary

It’s Rumi’s turn to frown, though she doesn’t let the expression stay on her face too long. There was a learning curve when she first started escorting souls on her own; maybe this is just the prelude to unlocking a new skill.

“Let me start over,” she placates, “I think I’m a little out of rhythm. I help guide souls like you to the world beyond. My name is Rumi, and I’m usually a lot better at this.”

“I’m Zoey,” Zoey smiles. “I think you’re doing great! But I’m definitely not dead.”

    //

Rumi is the latest in a long line of Shepherds, spiritual chaperones who are tasked with guiding wandering souls toward their homes in the afterlife. Up late studying one night, she feels the usual call of a soul, except this one insists she's not actually dead. While Rumi is trying to figure out how to solve that problem, another soul emerges, which Rumi has been told is impossible. And there's something special about these two that makes Rumi want to keep them.....

    Summary

It doesn’t know exactly when it started to understand.

At some point, when it’s maybe fifteen, it wonders—because it’s not as if it doesn’t hear people calling it “she” pretty much every day. Hadn’t it heard that as a kid as well? Even when it didn’t really interact with anyone, when it was too young to be around people, when there wasn’t really anyone talking about it. So it’s not like anyone has ever actually called it “it,” even though that’s what’s accurate since it isn’t a she. It can’t be—because it isn’t human. It’s a demon. It’s a monster.
