    Summary

Meet Xie Lian. 26. Single. Chronic lung condition.

Now, he’s a professional Weiqi player, but back then, he was Class Three’s Biggest Loser.

And this loser has nursed an eight-year-long crush on Class Golden Child, Hua Cheng, who is now one of Xianle City’s most famous—or infamous—criminal defense attorneys.

In the wake of a championship game, Xie Lian receives an impromptu invitation to a class reunion. Believing this to be his one chance to finally show Class Three that he’s not the same sickly kid they remember, and maybe make that love connection he’s been longing for, Xie Lian is devastated when Hua Cheng arrives with a silver wedding ring on his finger.

But when an intimate conversation in the dark leads to a surprise kiss and a tempting proposition, Xie Lian, who has spent his life predicting outcomes and calculating risk on the weiqi board, thinks he knows exactly what kind of game he and Hua Cheng are playing.

    He’s never been more wrong.

Xie Lian declines, scared of holding him back. Hua Cheng visits, and Xie Lian is always happy to have him sleep on his couch, and sad to see him go. His feelings, a crush which has grown into unrequited love, stay hidden.

Until Hua Cheng comes back to handle his father’s death, and everything changes.

“Hua Cheng, here to see my father,” Hua Cheng said as they stepped up to the counter. Xie Lian stood close, their fingers brushing.
“Oh,” the mortician said, nodding as he looked over at some papers. When he looked back up, his gaze landed on Xie Lian. “And he is?”
“I’m Xie Lian,” he answered with a polite smile. The mortician frowned, looking over at Hua Cheng.
“Only immediate family can come into the back with the deceased,” he said sharply. Hua Cheng’s brows rose, and then his left hand grabbed Xie Lian’s, their fingers tangling together.
“He’s my husband,” Hua Cheng said, and Xie Lian felt like his knees might give out.

    Summary

Xie Lian panted, head spinning as he finally gazed down at the person who broke into his apartment. What he found was a single eye looking back at him, blown wide. Their other eye was covered with an eye patch, with their long black hair spread out messily beneath their head. For a moment, there was nothing. Briefly, the words 'Crimson Rain' flashed through his mind.

    Quietly, the man asked, “Xianle?”

Xie Lian's favorite webnovel character Hua Cheng ends up in his apartment, somehow. He's really not sure how to handle this one.

    Summary

"No man shall die without his chest cracked open," Dr. Xie says coolly, not looking up from the book.

Fastening his scrub cap, Wei Wuxian falters. "What?"

"It is an old philosophy of cardiothoracic surgery," his attending continues. "What is the most common cause of death in the hours after open heart surgery?"

    "Bleeding, sir."

"That's correct. And how do you suppose you control the bleeding once it starts?"

Wei Wuxian pauses, his attending's meaning dawning on him. "You have to... stop it. By hand."

"Precisely," Dr. Xie remarks. "If you learn nothing else from this residency program, know this: a bleeding heart is a silent killer. You have time to handle it..." He rises, snapping the book shut. "...until you don't."

Or: Wei Wuxian was left heartbroken in his fourth year of medical school, unable to keep the best thing he ever had. He's been burying himself under a mountain of achievements ever since.
