Heading through to the kitchen, Merlin went to flick the kettle on, stopped by the note propped up against it. ‘Bedroom ;) xxx’ it read in a familiar, untidy scrawl—although the author had evidently tried his best to print it slightly more neatly than usual. Merlin shook his head at the hand-drawn winky face, before actually taking in what the note said. He took the stairs two at a time, crashing into his childhood bedroom, stopping dead a step inside the doorway.
Gwaine surprises Merlin with an early Christmas gift.

He leads her into the room, clean, and with the sole bed conspicuous in the centre. There's very little space around it to move, but at least it’s private. There’s a screen in one corner, and when Mithian peeks behind it she finds a tin bath tub, pushed up against the wall, taking up yet more space. "I'm afraid this is the only room available, my lady. I shall give you as much privacy as I am able, but I must insist I cannot leave you unguarded." His voice holds a small challenge, his lips the hint of a smirk, daring her to insist she can be left alone in a strange inn in a kingdom not her own.
Leon and Mithian stop for the night on the way back to Nemeth.

Merlin was part way through his degree in medicine when war broke out in 1914. Not meeting the criteria to join up he became a doctor for the soldiers with injuries severe enough to be sent home with little hope—the stately home he inherited from his late uncle Gaius serving as a hospital. It’s here he meets a grievously wounded Arthur Pendragon whose scars are not all physical. As Arthur heals bit by bit in both mind and body, learning to walk on his prosthetic leg and all the frustration that comes with it, Merlin sees the good, the bad, and the downright ugly sides of him. Despite this—or perhaps because of it—they grow closer.

“You loved him.”
It isn’t a question, nor a judgement. Leon, voice familiar and ever calm, simply states it like the fact it is. Merlin works his throat, isn’t sure he could speak around the lump in it even if his voice were not hoarse from long weeks of his self-imposed silent vigil. Instead he nods. He doesn’t have the strength to deny it in the wake of so much raw grief and crushed hope. Out of the corner of his eye he sees Leon nod too.
Merlin doesn’t know how much time passes before either of them speak again but it is long enough that Leon, without magic to sustain him, begins to shiver. Merlin opens his mouth to speak and finds that he cannot make words come. He clears his throat to try again, to tell Leon to leave this place before he catches his death, but he is interrupted as the knight commander speaks once more.

“You do think so highly of yourself, Sir,” Mithian quips, though her breath catches in her throat as he leans down towards her, further pressing into her space.
“Only because I’ve received no complains, Highness.” His lips draw the words atop the fluttering pulse behind her ear before Leon sets his lips upon her skin at last, dragging them down the curve of her neck and across the top of her exposed shoulder. She does not moan, doesn’t make a single sound, if only because there is no air left in her lungs, her body frozen between each press of his lips upon her.
