AOS!Trek with daemons! Bones has a big ol' bear, Spock has a crow. And Jim… well, people aren't really sure what Jim's daemon is. Bones and his Jenna have met Scarlet, Jim's daemon. But (now) she's a small little lizard like thing, lightning fast and expertly camouflaged. She'd put a chameleon to shame with her ability to disappear given any environment. Spock hasn't had the pleasure of meeting Scarlet, and feigns indifference; but his Andariel is somewhat obsessed with a certain starship Captain…

When Kirk shares this with Spock, he is told that Vulcans do not dream, deepening the mystery. Unbeknownst to Spock, Kirk is connecting with a remnant of his subconscious left behind from the meld.

As the dreams grow more intense, Kirk finds himself grappling with his own emotions, toward both his trusted first officer and the mysterious Vulcan prince in his dreams.

“You dare bring such an image here.” Dream Spock’s voice was low and sharp, cutting through the air like the blade he had just thrown.

“I didn’t bring it,” Kirk said defensively, raising his hands in a gesture of peace. “At least I don’t think I did.”

Dream Spock’s nostrils flared as he came towards him, his gaze never leaving Kirk’s. “I do not address you, my James. It is not you I blame. I blame him.” Dream Spock spat with venom.

The air around them became thick with tension, and Kirk found himself glancing back at the embedded weapon. “You mean Spock? I thought he was separating himself from us with a mental barrier?” he asked carefully.

Dream Spock huffed, “He lowered his mental barriers to investigate something in the waking world and is distracted. He is the one imagining you and that woman together,” he said quietly. “This is why I and I alone deserve you. He can not imagine himself with you, but he can imagine you with her.” his voice trembled at the edges, controlled, but only just.

Kirk felt hurt pierce his chest. “Oh.” So Spock was thinking of trying to find someone for him. Someone else he could steer Kirk's affection towards after this whole ordeal was over.

    Summary

Enterprise is safe to fly another day. All thanks to Captain James T. Kirk's sacrifice. He's made peace with his death, even though it breaks his heart one final time to see the hurt in Spock's eyes. Still, the last thing he gets to see is the face of one of his dearest friends... until his eyes snap back open. Not in a hospital. In a shuttle as it lands at the Academy.

“Once you exit the shuttle you are free to return to your dorms. Those of you who are new, you’ll follow me to registration and physicals,” a vaguely familiar-looking officer says, and Jim’s heart stops in his chest. Surprising, considering it shouldn’t be beating at all.

And, Jim’s brain is slow to comprehend, a man attached to it, staring at him with an expression that gives nothing away except that he is wet and not a fan of the fact.

AOS Spock finds a roadkill pre-academy Kirk in muddy ditch in Riverside; it may be the best and worst thing that's ever happened to him.

Jim inhaled sharply as he woke up, bolting upright in bed. His hands immediately went to his face, scraping and rubbing over it. He could feel his body tense, expecting pain, but there was nothing there. No pain at all. No weight on his chest. No severed bond.

    No severed bond.

“Jim,” he heard beside him, and then there were arms around his shoulders. Spock was hugging him, tight, and Jim immediately weaved his fingers into Spock’s hair to hold him close. “Jim.”

“You’re okay.” The sight of Spock, face-down, phaser burn on his back, was still fresh in Jim’s mind. He felt like he would be able to recall that image for the rest of his life. But – “We’re okay,” he breathed, pressing his forehead against the side of Spock’s neck. The wedding chain around Spock’s neck dug into him, and he was so grateful for it. “Oh my God. I saw you … what the hell is going on, Spock?”
