Lottie Matthews and Natalie Scatorccio have been broken up for three years. They’ve also spent those three years playing for rival colleges, turning every Columbia-NYU matchup into ninety minutes of fouls, arguments, and pretending they don’t still know exactly how to get under each other’s skin.
They’re very good at the pretending part. Until one game ends differently. A conversation becomes a text. The text becomes another. Somewhere between watching each other’s games, remembering things they’re supposed to have forgotten, and discovering that hating your ex is considerably easier when you aren’t talking to her every day, the rivalry starts getting complicated.
Then a tournament puts them in the same hotel. There’s jealousy. There’s an ill-advised kiss. There’s an even more ill-advised trip upstairs. And Natalie is pretty sure secretly sleeping with her ex-girlfriend while they’re still actively trying to beat each other on the soccer field is a terrible idea.

Your brother is now enrolled in kindergarten, where he quickly befriends a girl named Missy, unaware that her parents wouldn't ignore what was (supposedly) going on at home. At first, they assumed the occasional presence of you in situations where the father should be involved was a teenager helping out. But as you repeatedly show up in place of a missing parent, Missy’s parents start to take notice.
Or: MC's dad is a deadbeat, and she's raising her brother. Task Force 141, the parents of one of the MC's brother's friends, don’t like it.
