Tommy hummed, pulling one of his hands away to take a drink, and Gordon had to stop himself from chasing that warmth. Instead he squeezed Tommy’s remaining hand in his before he let go and ran his fingers through his hair.
Or, well, attempting to. He almost immediately got caught on a knot and winced. He’d taken a shower after the HEV suit was off, but he’d only had the energy to rinse off the blood and dirt. He most certainly had not brushed his hair.
Tommy seemed to notice, frowning slightly.
“Is your hair knotted?” He paused, and then: “...would you like me to brush it?”

Nothing even happens. There’s no single, final straw. No last thread, snapping.
They’ve been at war a year and a half. The Negotiator is in hyperspace, optimistically headed Core-wards, very unlikely to actually make it beyond the Mid Rim before being redirected. Obi-Wan is in his room – the room natborn officers still frequently call his office, despite it entirely lacking a desk, because he gave up the larger room assigned to him for being too far from his men. He’s sat cross-legged on the bed, filling out yet more reports. The casualty rates of their last three engagements make him ache to look at. He’s trying not to think about them.
It occurs to him, abruptly, just how much he spends his time trying not to think about. The thought strikes like a bell.

Summary
Makoto can’t remember much of his childhood, but he will always remember when he first met Pharos. His childhood memories are a blur, but the boy with abnormally blue eyes is one of two constants in his life. The second constant is the sound of rattling chains. It isn’t until much later in his life that Makoto learns that these two things are related.
