He’s surprised. Ilya likes to taunt him in bed the same way he taunts Shane on the ice; by being cocky, mean, and a little bit cruel. He enjoys getting a rise out of Shane while Shane likes to pretend to be annoyed by it. It’s a thing they do.
This is not their thing.
Or, Shane finds it difficult to ask for what he wants. Ilya has no problems understanding him anyway.

“Wait, what? You think you are Ilya’s best friend?” He couldn’t stop the giggle from escaping, forming into some kind of maniacal laugh. What the fuck? “Dude, no.”
No, full stop. He considered himself Ilya’s best friend, mostly because Ilya was his best friend, the only person who could truly understand all the neuroses that plagued him, who knew what was going on in his brain way before Shane decoded it. Ilya was his companion since he was a teen, and that didn’t end just because their legal term was husbands.
But even if that wasn’t the case, even if Shane wasn’t sure that Ilya felt the same way; Svetlana was right there.

“-moya rybka, I am sorry, sweet girl-” Ilya is saying, on his knees in the middle of their living room and patting the rug near him with what looks like devastation on his face as Anya continues to ignore him, curled up on Shane’s lap instead. Fresh off of several stacked events to fit them into a weekend–because Shane’s mom is nothing if not efficient when it comes to the deals she makes–Ilya got home only a few minutes ago, still in the outfit he’d left his Buzzfeed puppy interview in, which Anya had clearly not appreciated, sniffing him suspiciously after her initial excited greeting and then retreating to Shane immediately when he patted his thigh in welcome.
Shane is trying not to be obviously enjoying Ilya’s turmoil as much as he is, shifting Anya to lay on her back like a baby in one arm and cooing at her.
“I know, huh? Papa left and played with who knows how many other dogs, and the whole time you were here missing him. I bet he wasn’t even thinking about you, huh?”
“Hollander!” Ilya says, sounding scandalized. “Do not tell her that! Is not true!”
