Javier's heavy footsteps echo menacingly in the relative silence as he advances down the long hallway to where Joel waits.
A trickle of sweat rolls from the base of Joel's head down the line of his neck until it gets absorbed into the already damp collar of his shirt.

His body spoons up behind her, his arm banding across her stomach, his mouth presses to her neck. She laughs lightly as he nuzzles his nose into her hair and twiddles his fingers against the soft plain of her stomach. “Can you stay?” She mummers.
“Course, darlin’. As long as you’ll have me,” he whispers. His mustache tickles the sensitive skin of her throat as he smiles. With a sigh, she melts into his embrace, grasping his hand on her belly and holding tight.
Maria drifts off, thinking maybe this is real, maybe it’s love, and maybe it’s forever.

“Mateo, where does it hurt buddy? Buddy, where ya hurtin’? Tell daddy, baby.” He sees no obvious injuries, so Tommy runs gentle searching fingers over Mateo’s face and head just in case he somehow managed to bump it against something else on his way down, but finds nothing. “Please, buddy, please, tell daddy what’s wrong,” he begs as Mateo continues to scream, his face scrunched up and turning redder by the second.
Tommy can feel panic sweeping over him like a heavy wave, and his eyes start to burn with his own tears as Tilly continues to scratch at his arm, crying pitifully, desperate to reach him, and Mateo keeps screaming and screaming. Tommy feels himself starting to disassociate, the edges of his awareness becoming fuzzy and faded, so he reaches his hands into his hair and tugs hard at his scalp until it stings and the world around him comes back into view. He can’t do this right now, he can’t slip into his memories. He’s gotta be present here for Mateo and Tilly.
IE: Tommy is not having a great day. Everything that can go wrong does.

“And you’re sure you know where you’re going?” Bill asked for the third time that morning, hanging back from the fence as Frank shouldered the bag.
“Due north through the woods until I hit the highway, then follow it east until I smell bacon.” They both forced a laugh. Frank’s face was cheerful, but he couldn’t hide the nerves that stiffened his body language, nor the darkness in his eyes. Yet he mastered himself and placed a hand on Bill’s shoulder. “Thank you for all of this. It’s been… a revelation.”
“You just get there safe.”
“Will do.”
Something leaden and corrosive slogged through Bill’s veins as he unlocked the gate and ushered Frank out into the world. His senses were on high alert on this side of the fence and he felt edgy and ice cold. “Don’t fall in any holes,” he offered lamely.
“Hey, it’s worked out well for me so far…” A burst of a smile like sunshine that quickly disappeared behind a cloud. “Bye, Bill. Take care.”

Maria let out a long, slow exhale, as if she’d been holding her breath all this time and bit the corner of her lips. “What else do you have in Texas?”
His gaze dipped to her hair, back to her face—down again. She followed its path. A tiny jacaranda petal lingered on a loose strand of her hair, neon purple against deep brown. She glanced back at him and tipped her chin up, eyes steady on his. The corners of his lips lifted, settled into a slow smile. He leaned in, and the scent of soap, sun-dried cotton, and raw wood murmured across her skin, familiar like a long-forgotten memory.
He reached up, slow enough for her to stop him, and brushed his fingers down the lock of her hair.
The petal slipped free. They followed its gentle, fluttering trail to the concrete.
“I could tell you, or…” His gaze flickered to hers, lashes dark and ridiculously long. “You could see for yourself.”

One night in an LA parking lot, Maria and Tommy share a cigarette and a choice. Life splinters into a thousand stories. All of them fade like smoke. Except one.

'“It’s that bad, huh?” Joel said gruffly, self-consciously running his hand through his hair, his eyes fixed on the curls on Benji’s head. “I…” he cleared his throat and looked at Tommy for help.
“Tess cuts our hair,” Tommy blurted out, pushing a glass of whiskey into Joel’s hand as he came around the couch.
Maria blinked at them for a moment, thinking back to literally three days prior when she’d given Tommy a trim. And the dozen or so times before that.
“Used to,” Tommy clarified, sitting down. “She always cut our hair. It’s… her job.”
Joel took a swig of his drink and sighed, not quite able to look at Maria or Ellie yet.
“I’m so sorry, Joel,” Maria said quietly.'
