  1. Summary

    “These violent delights have violent ends
    And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
    Which as they kiss consume. The sweetest honey
    Is loathsome in his own deliciousness
    And in the taste confounds the appetite.
    Therefore love moderately; long love doth so;
    Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow.”

    William Shakespeare, Romeo And Juliet.

    Summary

    Uncle Gwayne leaves Oldtown, and over the course of many months, Ormund exchanges more letters with him than Daeron has ever exchanged with his own mother. He cannot imagine what they have to say, as they rarely saw eye to eye, and Ormund oft used Gwayne as a proverbial scratching post more often than not.

    He does not think that his cousin and uncle have ever been apart this long in their entire lives, so perhaps they do not know how to not talk.

    Daeron wonders if Gwayne is happy out there in the world, free at last.

    ...and he wonders if Ormund resents that.

    Summary

    He's better than Ormund at many things, always has been. Dueling (not grappling, never grappling), riding (but not hunting), humility over pride.

    Over the many years, he's learned that throwing the fight has a better outcome than beating his lordly cousin in any competition.

    Ormund is the Head of Hightower House, after all. Sometimes the knee must be bent.

    ------------------------------------

    "He was awful to you, earlier." Daeron looked distinctly uncomfortable as they sat together in what now passed for Gwayne's room in Tumbleton, a chess board between them. His nephew was wringing his hands as though they were wet rags and Daeron a washerwoman. "Those things he said..."

    {The false empathic look, paired with 'I'm sure you found solace with some of your brothers in arms'}

    Gwayne stared at the floor, counting the cracks he found there. "Put it from your mind, Daeron. It was meant to humiliate me, not you. Long has he missed throwing his knives at me, in my absence. That is all that was. His idea of fun. A warm welcome home, if you will."

    Summary

    "He isn’t keeping me because I’m his favorite — he’s keeping me because I’m the only one left in this Hell with resilience. I scream with meaning."

    AM keeps Ted for himself because he begins to realize the other four are destroying what he loves most about him -- his narcissism. What follows is terror, mutilation, and eventually, privilege, at the end of the world.

He just hopes his crew on the Red Force will eventually learn to love the feral little ex-convict.

    Summary

    Whatever it was that Buggy had or hadn’t done, Shanks started to smile again. He let go of Buggy’s chin.

    “Like that,” he praised, his voice once more a loving timber, his hand a gentle caress.

    “Keep your eyes on me,” he commanded, and Buggy wanted to wail, to scream, to laugh.
