It had turned into a lovely afternoon, as the slow moving storm that passed over Hyrule Castle in the morning had died down, moving on through the neighboring areas. The cool breeze and clearing cloud cover promised great weather for the rest of the day, helping lift the spirits of the castle’s residents, and in particular, a certain young woman.
Queen Zelda had finished her morning obligations, her scheduled meetings with multiple dignitaries, and looking over the general daily paperwork that came with her position. The rather dreary morning had left her feeling somewhat down, but with promising weather approaching, how could she not smile and enjoy it, at least for a little while?

“I’m grateful to you,” Uli said quietly, following her gaze out the window. “He’s been through so much that Rusl and I don’t understand. But he says that you see him clearly.”
That was true. No matter how different their backgrounds, there was so much Zelda shared with Link. The memories of neverending dusk, of wolves with bloody muzzles, of Midna’s coy smirk and stubborn pride. The scar Zelda’s unwilling blade had carved beneath his eye; the lightning-marks climbing up her limbs from when he’d redirected magic at her puppeted body. They were tied together in a way that had terrified her at first—but that was before she’d loved him.
Zelda wiped her stinging eyes and said simply, “He sees me too.”

“Honestly, no,” Zelda finally replied to her friend, who had crossed her arms and was waning patience from her answer. “I wouldn’t say I hate him. He’s a good friend, a great person, and just has an amazing personality overall. I just don’t want to add reason behind my father’s expectations.”
Midna hummed, and turned her back on Zelda, heading for the door. Just before exiting, though, she turned around and quirked her eyebrow at her, a smirk starting to form on her lips.
“But is that what you really want?”
Or, in other words, being a princess in denial has its paybacks.
