“What’re you doing here?” Robby sighed out.
“Our apartment had a leak, Trinity went to a friend’s house. Thought I’d just wander around but I figured that was a stupid idea. Was probably a stupid idea to come here too.”
Whitaker usually wasn’t this nervous. Robby couldn’t blame him, though. He'd be nervous too if he ended up on his ex’s doorstep.

Dennis finds himself back at Robby’s house with nowhere to stay the night. He somehow finds himself back in Robby’s bed, too.

Summary
When Dennis agrees to house-sit for Robby, he’s expecting three months of quiet and an excuse to avoid everything he’s been trying not to think about.
Instead, he finds Robby still at home, exhausted and overwhelmed, taking care of baby Jane Doe.
Dennis offers to help—just for a few hours, just until things settle—but it’s easier to stay than to leave. As routines form and walls come down, he keeps finding reasons not to go, until what started as something temporary begins to feel dangerously close to a life neither of them ever planned.

He can hear Whitaker stumbling behind him. Probably due to Robby’s haste rather than any of the alcohol he’d consume. “I’m sorry about Trinity, Robby, she was drunk and too excited because she was going home with-”
“Don’t mention it, Whitaker.”
He doesn’t take the hint this time. “No because she ruined the mood, which sucks because I was having a great time with-”“Seriously, shut up.”
