Kaveh clicks his tongue. “Well, I hope you are also aware that with all these requirements, you don’t get a set (A+B), or even (A+B+C). Yours is a set comprised of the entire Sumerian alphabet!”
Kaveh has had enough of Alhaitham always loitering around the house. In an attempt to get Alhaitham to go out more often, he jokingly tells him to start dating someone. Much to Kaveh’s shock, Alhaitham agrees—and promptly assigns him as his personal matchmaker. And even though Alhaitham’s requirements for his ideal partner are annoyingly specific, Kaveh refuses to back down from a good challenge. He’s confident in his abilities—that is, until his own feelings start getting in the way...

Kaveh’s heart was pounding, he felt like the rug had been pulled out from under him, though not in an entirely unpleasant way. Alhaitham's affection…?
It was so hard to know what to do now, how to react, when he had never expected to talk like this with Alhaitham again.

“There will come a day, Kaveh,” calloused hands reached for him again, Alhaitham’s voice a low husk, deep and sultry as it curled around the words. “When I will take you rough and hard, when I will fuck you against every available surface of this house, as I’ve wanted to for months.”
Kaveh shuddered in place, the hands divesting him off his undergarments helping very little with keeping his composure, the heated skin-contact making his breath catch and stall.
“In the shower,” Alhaitham rasped against his cheek. “Against the wall, over our table, next to the vase you find so hideous.” Kaveh made a choked noise at that, hands fluttering over Alhaitham chest before landing on toned arms, desperate to hold on to anything at this point.
“But today,” Alhaitham promised, the deep timber causing shivers to run down Kaveh’s spine. “Today, I’ll take my time with you. Take you apart slowly, meticulously. Spread you wide on my fingers, make you come again and again, and watch as you fall apart.”

“Why does it not–” Kaveh’s voice ripped out in a whine. “Have you not thought about it at all since then?”
A long pause. The longest one yet. “Who says I haven’t?”
Lightning flashed through the window, illuminating Al-Haitham’s face. Half of it was still wrapped in shadow, blocked by Kaveh’s head, but he could see the distance between them measured, laid flat by the light. The lightning went. The room went dark. But the memory of Al-Haitham’s wide eyes did not leave him.
What did he want?
“Have you?” asked Kaveh.
“Have you?” Al-Haitham’s voice was so quiet, buried under the murmur of the rain.
Kaveh swallowed. “I mean…I thought that was obvious.”
Kaveh accidentally sleeps with Al-Haitham. And then...keeps sleeping with him.

Across from him, Tighnari raises a single eyebrow.
Kaveh’s eyes go wide. “No, I—not like that.”
One night, Al-Haitham shows up at Kaveh's bedroom door and sleeps in his bed. They don't talk about it.

His hands play with the hem of the shirt before slipping underneath to find the bare skin of Kaveh’s toned abdomen. Alhaitham knows of the stars and the blood-stained past of their land. He knows of legends, myths, and truths. He knows of archons and devils. Alhaitham is a wise man with extensive knowledge on many things and he has never been shy to show it.

“How unfortunate for you to have someone that cares about your wellbeing.”
Kaveh laughed. “Is that what it is now? I wasn’t just disturbing your sleep?”
“Believe what you like.” It was both. Unfortunately for Alhaitham, he did care about Kaveh’s wellbeing, which is why he chose to do things like this. But it seemed no matter how often Alhaitham explicitly stated this, Kaveh would brush it off. It was a dance they had done for years, and Alhaitham didn’t make any more effort to make Kaveh understand he was serious. Kaveh wouldn’t believe him, or he would choose not to. It wouldn’t change anything if Kaveh believed it. Alhaitham would still be going through the motions of getting him to sleep in his bed on nights like this. They would still be having the same arguments. This was just another thing that had become a fact for Alhaitham about his life. Alhaitham cared about Kaveh. He would continue to care about him and for him, and Kaveh would continue to dismiss it. This was a fact that Alhaitham had learned to accept, ignoring the annoying twinge of pain that came with it.

Kaveh tilts his head. He follows the grout-line between the tiles with the sole of his shoe subconsciously, grounding himself in the repetitive motion.
Nasir continues with a sigh. “It seems that the Acting Grand Sage intends to decline our request for funding.”
“Ah. That’s… unfortunate.” Kaveh speaks slowly, carefully concealing his initial reaction. This isn’t the first he’s heard of this, but he didn’t consider it to be an actual, real possibility. He’s both shocked and utterly unsurprised at the same time. “But what does that have to do with me, specifically?”
“You know the Acting Grand Sage, do you not?”
A simple question with a complicated answer.
Kaveh is tasked with securing the funding for Kshahrewar from the Acting Grand Sage. Things get complicated.

Kaveh starts a garden, right outside the window his drafting desk faces.
At first, it’s not much. A few sprouts here and there, and a few flowers he managed to convince Tighnari to let him transplant. Tighnari had offered to help, but Kaveh, stubbornly as ever, had refused, saying this was something he needed to do on his own.
(Tighnari has the kindness not to ask if it’s really gardening that’s on Kaveh’s mind.)
